Elversberg stuns Mainz 05 with 4-1 rout in the Bundesliga
Against all odds, Elversberg raced out to a commanding 3-0 first-half lead and sealed a win that pulls it level with Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga standings.

Felix Keidel needed just six minutes to get the party started at the URSAPHARM-Arena an der Kaiserlinde. A free kick struck with his right foot that curled in by the right side of the goal gave Elversberg the lead, and from there the match slipped away from Mainz 05 entirely, finishing 4-1 in the Bundesliga.
What stands out is that before kickoff, the script pointed in a completely different direction: our projections gave Mainz 05 a 40% chance of winning, with 33% for Elversberg and 27% for a draw, with fairly even expected goals figures (1.43 for the home side and 1.59 for the visitors). The match itself told a very different story.
A first half that settled almost everything
After Keidel's stunning free kick, Elversberg didn't let up. In the 25th minute, Francis Onyeka doubled the lead with a left-footed strike from the center of the box, assisted by David Mokwa, and in the final minute of the first half, just as the fourth official had signaled only one minute of stoppage time, Maurice Krattenmacher made it three with a low shot into the left side of the net off a corner kick. Mainz 05 went into the break down 3-0 without finding any real answers, beyond a couple of half chances from Phillip Tietz and Stefan Posch that failed to hit the target.
In the second half, Urs Fischer's side tried to respond through substitutions, sending on Benedict Hollerbach, Ransford Königsdörffer, Silvan Widmer and Lennard Maloney all at once in the 62nd minute. There was even a goal from Königsdörffer that appeared to cut the deficit, but it was disallowed after a VAR review. Elversberg, for its part, kept striking: Cole Campbell, who had come on in the 76th minute, made it 4-0 in the 90th minute with a low shot from the center of the box, assisted by Nicholas Mickelson. A minute later, Hollerbach pulled one back with a close-range grounder that was confirmed after review, and the match ended with Stefan Posch sent off for a second yellow card in the 94th minute.
What the numbers say
Elversberg controlled possession and was sharper in the final third, though the overall stats don't show a gap as wide as the scoreline suggests.
| Stat | Elversberg | Mainz 05 |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 54.1 | 45.9 |
| Shots | 13 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 2 |
| Big chances | 1 | 3 |
| Corners | 5 | 11 |
| Passes | 412 | 334 |
| Fouls committed | 8 | 22 |
Interestingly, according to our own xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Mainz 05 actually created more danger than Elversberg (2.364 versus 1.146), a reflection of the three big chances the visitors had compared to just one for the home side. But soccer is decided by goals, not averages, and Elversberg was far more clinical when it mattered most.
What the result means
With this win, Elversberg moves to 13 points through eight matches played, with four wins, one draw and three losses, sitting just three points above Mainz 05, which stays on 10 points after the same number of matches, with three wins, one draw and four losses. Both clubs sit in the middle of the table, though the gap between them remains razor thin.
For Mainz 05, the match will be remembered for a first half in which it couldn't contain Elversberg and for a late response that, despite Hollerbach's goal and the chances created in the closing minutes, came too late to change the outcome. Elversberg, meanwhile, walks away with a resounding win that flies in the face of everything that was projected before kickoff.
