Frosinone Routs Lecce 5-1 in Benito Stirpe Statement Win
With goals of every kind, Frosinone blew past expectations and climbed the Serie A table after demolishing Lecce.

Four goals in the first 71 minutes turned the Benito Stirpe into a party: Frosinone ran right over Lecce with a convincing 5-1 that produced numbers worth remembering. What figured to be a tight contest instead became an offensive showcase for the home side, which found the net in every way imaginable: a combination play, a penalty, a counterattack and even a VAR review.
Frosinone didn't waste much time breaking the deadlock. In the 24th minute, Matteo Cichella struck a right-footed shot from the center of the box, set up by Farès Ghedjemis, to make it 1-0. Lecce, which had managed a few scattered chances through Paco Esteban and Omri Gandelman, couldn't respond, and things got worse right before halftime: a foul by Jamil Siebert inside the area on Giorgi Kvernadze led to a penalty, which Giacomo Calò converted with a low shot just inside the left post in the 45th minute. The 2-0 scoreline held into the break, with the game's outcome all but settled.
The Second Half Buried Lecce for Good
The second half picked up right where the first left off. In the 58th minute, Antonio Raimondo finished with his left foot from the center of the box, again set up by Kvernadze, this time with a through ball, making it 3-0. Thirteen minutes later, Frosinone extended the lead further: Daniel Bîrligea, who had just come on as a substitute, finished with his right foot after a counterattack built by Romano Schmid. The goal was confirmed only after a VAR review, and the score moved to 4-0 in the 71st minute.
Lecce managed to put a better face on the scoreline in the 81st minute, when Joël Monteiro capitalized on a counterattack set up by Olaf Gorter to make it 4-1. But Frosinone still had room to add more: deep into stoppage time, the home side rounded out the rout and sealed the final 5-1.
A Gap the Numbers Back Up
Frosinone's dominance was no fluke or one-off piece of luck. The match statistics show a clear superiority from start to finish:
| Stat | Frosinone | Lecce |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 59.6 | 40.4 |
| Shots | 26 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 9 | 6 |
| Big chances | 5 | 2 |
| Corners | 10 | 3 |
| Passes | 364 | 247 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 17 |
Frosinone had more than double the shots of Lecce and also comfortably won out in corners and big chances. According to our expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shots, Frosinone generated 4.05 expected goals compared to Lecce's 1.81, a gap that confirms the 5-1 scoreline wasn't inflated but rather a fairly faithful reflection of what happened on the field.
It's worth comparing this to our pre-match projections: our preview gave Frosinone a 53% chance of winning, with a draw at 28% and a Lecce win at 19%, and projected 1.62 expected goals for the home side against 0.91 for the visitors. The result ended up far exceeding that projection: Frosinone didn't just win as expected, it did so by a margin well beyond what was forecast.
With this result, Frosinone reaches 17 points from 9 matches played, sitting in sixth place in Serie A, while Lecce remains on 9 points from the same number of games, in 14th place, with a goal difference that has now piled up to minus nine. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 8 points, and an afternoon like this one, with five goals scored and just a single real threat conceded, leaves Frosinone with plenty of arguments to keep climbing the table.
