Hoffenheim stuns Lyon with two goals in the same minute, wins 3-0 in the Europa League

Kramaric scored a goal and set up two others to seal a match that the preview had tipped in Lyon's favor, a team that was outplayed despite dominating possession.

Hoffenheim stuns Lyon with two goals in the same minute, wins 3-0 in the Europa League

It took Hoffenheim just three minutes to settle a match that, on paper, had a different favorite. Between the 48th minute and the 48th minute (yes, the same minute on the clock, with the precision of a copy-paste job) the German side put two goals past Lyon right at the start of the second half, and that was enough to seal a 3-0 win at the SNP Arena in the Europa League.

The first half had ended with Hoffenheim ahead by the slimmest of margins thanks to a header from Andrej Kramaric in stoppage time, but the match still felt even: Lyon controlled more of the ball and had created some danger through Keito Nakamura and Kail Boudache. What came next changed everything. Right at the start of the second half, in the 48th minute, Kramaric popped up again on the left side to head home from point-blank range and make it 1-0. Before Lyon could even regroup, the second goal arrived: Adam Daghim finished with his right foot by the left post, set up once again by Kramaric, for the 2-0. Two goals in the same minute of the clock left the match essentially decided before a quarter of an hour of the second half had even passed.

The third goal came later, in the 82nd minute, when Adam Hlozek, who had come on from the bench, finished with his right foot from the center of the box to put the game away. Once again it was Kramaric providing the assist, the player who ended up unlocking every decisive play for the home side.

A dominance backed by the numbers

The curious part is that Lyon had more possession and more passes over the course of the match, but that counted for little against a Hoffenheim side that was far more efficient and sharp in the final third.

Twenty-one shots to eight, eight of them on target against just two for Lyon, tell the story of a team that kept testing Dominik Greif again and again while the French side barely threatened. That gap also shows up in the match's estimated xG (an in-house calculation based on shots, not an official metric): 2.026 for Hoffenheim against just 0.93 for Lyon, a gap that backs up what was seen on the field.

What the preview said

The result ran counter to what we had projected before the match. Our preview gave Lyon a 47% chance of winning, against 28% for Hoffenheim and 25% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.88 for Lyon and 1.44 for Hoffenheim. None of that held up: the German side not only won, it did so with authority and without conceding a single goal.

What it means in the standings

In the table, the win lets Hoffenheim keep building in a campaign that had been difficult up to now: they arrived with just 3 points from 3 matches played, with a record of one win and two losses. Lyon, for their part, had 6 points from 3 outings before this match, with two wins and one loss, and the gap in points between the two sides was just 3 before this meeting. That gap will shift now, though the headline from the night was not the league position but the ruthlessness with which Hoffenheim settled the match in just three minutes of the second half.

For Lyon, the takeaway is an uncomfortable one: they controlled the ball but never found a way to turn that possession into real danger, and they paid dearly for every defensive lapse in the decisive areas of the pitch. For Hoffenheim, on the other hand, the night will be remembered as one of those performances where everything that was tried came off: Kramaric was the headline name, with a goal and two assists, in a match the German side had put away long before anyone could have expected.
