LASK Stuns Sporting CP in Lisbon With Lightning Second-Half Comeback: 2-3
Suárez put Sporting ahead from the penalty spot, but two LASK goals in five counterattacking minutes in the second half sealed an upset that defied every prediction.

It took Luis Suárez just four minutes to put Estádio José Alvalade in Sporting CP's favor: a penalty converted with a low shot into the left corner for 1-0. Ten minutes later it was already level. What looked like a routine night for Sporting in the Champions League ended instead with a reality check: 2-3 in favor of LASK, in a comeback cooked up entirely on the counterattack in the second half.
The opening penalty came after Robert Ljubicic fouled Nestory Irankunda inside the box, and Suárez made no mistake. But Sporting barely had time to enjoy the lead: in the 14th minute, Christoph Lang equalized with a low shot, also into the left corner, assisted by Kasper Jørgensen. The rest of the first half belonged to the Portuguese side, though without reward: Irankunda, Geny Catamo (twice) and Maxi Araújo all had chances, but the sides went into the break tied 1-1.
The story changed in the second half, and it changed fast. In the 62nd minute, Sasa Kalajdzic finished with his right foot, again into the left corner, after an assist from Ljubicic on a quick break: 1-2. Five minutes later, in the 67th minute, Krystof Danek extended the lead with a left-footed strike from inside the box, assisted by Samuel Adeniran, also on a counterattacking play: 1-3. In barely five minutes, LASK had flipped a match that Sporting had, until then, controlled with ease.
The home side tried to respond with substitutions, bringing on Flávio Gonçalves, Luís Guilherme, Jesse Derry and Fotis Ioannidis, and found a goal in the 88th minute: Suárez, with his left foot from close range, scored his second of the match to make it 2-3, a scoreline that held firm despite a seven-minute stoppage time window added by the fourth official.
The numbers behind the match
Sporting CP controlled the ball and the territory, but LASK was more lethal with the little it had. The gap between total shots and shots on target tells much of the story.
| Stat | Sporting CP | LASK |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 62.3 | 37.7 |
| Shots | 16 | 11 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 7 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 7 | 4 |
| Passes | 574 | 355 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 22 |
The most striking figure is the relationship between total shots and shots on target: LASK needed far less volume to generate more direct danger, and the xG numbers calculated after the fact partly confirm this, though with an important caveat. Based on our estimate using shot location, Sporting generated 3.239 expected goals to LASK's 1.173, a figure that reflects Portuguese territorial dominance more than the actual finishing efficiency of either team.
That gap between xG and the final score is, in fact, the real story of the match. Beforehand, our projection gave Sporting CP a 60% chance of winning, against just 19% for LASK and 21% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.33 for the home side and 1.26 for the visitors. The result flatly contradicted that forecast: the team that arrived as the heavy favorite ended up losing at home despite dominating possession, passing and even generated xG.
What it means in the standings
The result is a blow to Sporting CP's standing, as the club arrived at this match with a record of two wins and one loss in the competition and now adds another defeat. LASK, for its part, still cannot find its footing in the league phase: the win isn't enough to lift it out of the bottom positions, though it leaves the club with a performance to remember away from home. The points gap between the two sides in the overall table is just 3, a sign of how tight the lower-middle section of this Champions League campaign has become.
For Sporting CP, it's an uncomfortable takeaway: controlling the ball and piling up shots counted for nothing against a rival that struck with surgical precision at exactly the right moments. For LASK, on the other hand, the night in Lisbon stands as proof that a well-executed counterattack can beat any possession statistic.
