Lecce routs Udinese 3-0 despite holding just 33% of possession
Udinese controlled 66.8% of possession but fell to a ruthless Lecce side that needed just three more shots on target to seal a 0-3 win at the Bluenergy Stadium.

The Bluenergy Stadium wanted a lift for Udinese and instead got a thrashing courtesy of Lecce. The final score read 0-3, with three goals coming from three separate forays into the box that left Udinese without an answer despite holding the ball for nearly the entire match. And that's the first oddity of the afternoon: Udinese controlled 66.8% of possession and still walked away routed.
The game broke open early. Only 10 minutes had been played when a corner reached the box and Kialonda Gaspar rose to head it home from close range, looping it into the left corner off a cross from Antonino Gallo. Udinese hadn't recovered when, in the 32nd minute, another Lecce corner ended up in the back of the net: Tiago Gabriel connected with a header that was blocked, but Konan N'Dri pounced on the rebound and bundled it in from close range to make it 0-2. Two goals, two corners, two warning signs that Lecce was proving far more effective than the possession numbers suggested.
Udinese had their best chance to respond right around the hour mark. In the 58th minute, Jakub Piotrowski put the ball in the net, but the celebration was short lived: VAR reviewed the play and chalked off the goal. It was the closest thing to a real comeback hope the home side had all match, and it vanished on referee Marco Guida's review screen.
The third blow landed as the match was winding down. In the 85th minute, on the break, Jamil Siebert finished with his right foot from inside the box, also into the left corner, to seal the 0-3 and make clear that the gap on the field had been far wider than the possession count implied.
The numbers behind the rout
The stats explain pretty well what played out: Udinese had the ball, but Lecce had the trigger. The visitors doubled up their hosts in shots on target and big chances created, and that gap also shows up in the match's estimated xG, calculated from shot location: 0.758 for Udinese versus 4.293 for Lecce, a gulf that confirms the hosts lacked any real bite despite controlling the ball.
| Stat | Udinese | Lecce |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 66.8 | 33.2 |
| Shots | 14 | 17 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 11 |
| Big chances | 1 | 5 |
| Corners | 1 | 4 |
| Passes | 520 | 258 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 11 |
That contrast between holding the ball and failing to create danger also showed up in Udinese's missed chances: Keinan Davis, Juan Arizala, Matteo Palma and Unai Gomez all had attempts at different points in the match, but none found their way past the Lecce goal. Lecce, on the other hand, made their efficiency count in the areas that actually mattered.
The result also flew in the face of pre-match projections. Our preview gave Udinese a 52% chance of winning, with just 18% for Lecce, and expected goals of 1.47 for the hosts against 0.78 for the visitors. None of that held up: the team with the longer odds on paper was the one that imposed a clear gap on the scoreboard.
What it means for the table
In the Serie A standings, the blow is especially painful for Udinese, who enter this match in last place with 4 points from 7 games, the product of 1 win, 1 draw and 5 losses. Lecce aren't exactly thriving either (9 points from 7 matches, with 3 wins and 4 losses), but this rout lets them open up a 5 point cushion over their rival in the standings.
For Udinese, the match leaves a worrying picture: holding the ball counted for nothing against a rival that, with far less possession, was ruthless with every chance it got. For Lecce, on the other hand, it was a perfect afternoon on the road, arriving just when they needed it most.
