Marítimo Snatches Stoppage Time Equalizer to Spoil Gil Vicente's Party

Israel Ayuma scored in the 92nd minute, denying Gil Vicente a win it had controlled for almost the entire match.

Marítimo Snatches Stoppage Time Equalizer to Spoil Gil Vicente's Party

Gil Vicente was a whisker away from securing a win it had cooked up since the 6th minute, but Marítimo showed up right when there was no time left for anything else. The 1-1 draw at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos was settled in the 92nd minute, in a match Liga Portugal will remember for what happened in the final gasp.

The home side went ahead early with a well-built move: a cross from Gil Martins into the box and a left-footed finish from Murilo de Souza for the 1-0. From there, Gil Vicente controlled the ball and the chances without ever fully stepping on the gas, circling the opposing box with the likes of Santi García, Gil Martins and Murilo de Souza himself, who had several more looks before halftime, though the second goal never came. Marítimo, for its part, grew into the game and gave a few warnings with shots from Martín Tejón, Vladan Danilovic and Romain Correia, though without seriously troubling the home goalkeeper.

The second half followed a similar script: Gil Vicente kept pushing with Diogo Prioste, Gil Martins and Santi García, who tried his luck several times from outside the box without success. Marítimo brought on fresh legs (Maurice Boakye and Israel Ayuma entered in the 66th minute) looking for a spark to bring the game to life. That spark took its time, but it arrived at just the right moment: deep into stoppage time, with five extra minutes signaled by the fourth official, Boakye set up Israel Ayuma, who curled a right-footed finish into the top corner to make it 1-1 in the 92nd minute. It was a gut punch for Gil Vicente, which watched the win slip away in the match's final breath.

The Numbers Behind the Match

The home side's dominance showed up in the stats. Gil Vicente controlled possession and generated more overall volume, though Marítimo wasn't as far behind in clear-cut chances as the scoreline might suggest.

The xG figures calculated from the match's shots also point to a game that was more even in terms of danger created than the shot count suggests: 1.99 for Gil Vicente versus 1.36 for Marítimo, a number that confirms the visiting side created enough to walk away with something, even if it came down to a single decisive play.

The preview had marked Gil Vicente as the clear favorite: our projection gave it a 52% chance of winning, versus 29% for a draw and just 19% for Marítimo, with expected goals of 1.52 for the home side and 0.81 for the visitors. The final result, with that stoppage time equalizer, ended up landing closer to the least likely of the three scenarios, leaving Marítimo with a point that looked hard to come by beforehand.

What It Means in the Table

In the standings, both teams arrived with things tight: Gil Vicente had 8 points from 6 games played (2 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses), and Marítimo also had 8 points but from 7 games played (2 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses). With this draw, neither team makes a big jump in the table, but Marítimo can walk away feeling like it rescued something that seemed lost, while Gil Vicente is left with the regret of not being able to close out a match it had under control for almost the entire time.
