Real Madrid Blows Rayo Vallecano Away at the Bernabeu with 4-1 Rout Sealed in First Half Hour

Mbappe scores twice and Bellingham seals Madrid's control in the first 40 minutes of a La Liga clash.

Real Madrid Blows Rayo Vallecano Away at the Bernabeu with 4-1 Rout Sealed in First Half Hour

It took Real Madrid just thirteen minutes to put the game on track, and sixteen to start thinking about a rout. The home side ended up winning 4-1 over Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabeu, in a La Liga match that was decided by a devastating opening half hour.

The penalty came first: in the 12th minute, Florian Lejeune brought down Alvaro Carreras inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. A minute later, Kylian Mbappe made it 1-0 from twelve yards. Rayo barely had time to regroup when, in the 16th minute, Carreras himself popped up in the middle of the area to finish left footed off a Mbappe pass and make it 2-0. And before the first 40 minutes were up, Jude Bellingham finished with his right foot off a Vinicius Junior cross to make it 3-0, putting the game out of reach in a first half that Real Madrid dominated with total authority.

Rayo Vallecano, however, did not hide. Before the collapse they had chances of their own, with shots from Pedro Diaz and Giorgi Tsitaishvili that Thibaut Courtois handled without much trouble, and even a Pedro Diaz effort that hit the post right at the start of the second half. That fighting spirit paid off in the 50th minute: Sergio Camello received the ball on the right side of the box and beat Courtois low for the 3-1, a goal that brought some tension back to the Bernabeu.

But it was not enough. Real Madrid managed the lead for much of the second half, with clear chances denied by goalkeeper Emil Audero or crashing off the post, like Mbappe's shot in first half stoppage time. The final blow came in second half stoppage time: in the 90th minute, off a counterattack, Arda Guler set up Mbappe, who finished low with his right foot for his second goal of the night and the final 4-1.

The numbers behind the dominance

The stats back up what was seen on the field: a superior Real Madrid across almost every category, though with a Rayo side that created more than the scoreline suggests.

According to our estimate based on the shots taken in the match, Real Madrid generated 2.907 expected goals against 1.318 for Rayo Vallecano, a gap that confirms the home side's superiority but also makes clear that the visitors carried offensive threat for much of the 90 minutes.

What the preview said

Ahead of the match we projected a home win at 65% probability, against 22% for a draw and 13% for an away win, with expected goals of 2.17 for Real Madrid and 0.89 for Rayo Vallecano (3.07 combined). The result ended up exceeding even that favorable forecast: Real Madrid did not just win, they scored four goals, more than we had projected for the entire match between both teams combined based on the preview's expected goals.

What the match leaves behind

With this result, Real Madrid reaches 12 points from five matches played, with four wins and one loss, sitting just one point behind Barcelona, the leader with the same points tally but a game in hand. Rayo Vallecano, meanwhile, stays on 4 points from five matches, with one win, one draw and three losses, in a lower table zone that is starting to weigh on them. For the Vallecas side, the challenge will be fixing the defensive fragility they showed against a rival that took advantage of every opening in the first half; for Real Madrid, the offensive display with Mbappe at the center of it all once again shows the kind of solidity that backs up their place near the top of the standings.
