Toulouse hits the woodwork three times, held to scoreless draw by Troyes

Three shots off the post, nearly twenty fouls committed and not a single goal: Toulouse and Troyes split the points with a 0-0 draw at the Stadium de Toulouse, a result that speaks more to frustrated attacking play than a tightly shut defense. Casper Tengstedt tested the woodwork three times without luck, and Troyes held firm just enough to walk away with a point that, on paper, meant more to the visitors.

The script was clear from the start: Toulouse pushed forward relentlessly while Troyes sat back waiting for its chance. As early as the 4th minute, Thomas Jorgensen headed a ball wide after a through pass from Aron Donnum. A minute later, Renaud Ripart answered with a shot that was blocked. The most intense stretch came after the quarter-hour mark: in the 12th minute, Donnum and, seconds later, Tengstedt tested the Troyes goalkeeper with low shots that were both saved. Tengstedt popped up again in the 23rd minute, this time with a shot that skimmed just wide of the post. The home side hovered around the goal time and again, but the woodwork and some key saves kept the game scoreless.

The match heated up alongside the cards: between the 24th and 39th minutes, yellow cards went out to Rafik Messali, Donnum, Junior Diaz, Cristian Casseres and Timothe Nkada, a reflection of how hard both sides were fighting for every fifty-fifty ball. The first half ended scoreless with no stoppage time added.

In the second half, Toulouse kept pressing the same way: Tengstedt tried his luck again in the 50th minute, this time with his left foot, but once more Troyes came up with an answer. The visitors had their best spell between the 52nd and 66th minutes, with Antoine Mille firing twice in a row from outside the box and Merwan Ifnaoui also testing from distance. There was even a double injury stoppage that halted the rhythm of the match, with Junior Diaz and Tengstedt both needing attention at almost the same time.

The substitutions brought a bit more energy but no more clarity: Ilyas Azizi tried from outside the area in the 74th minute, and late on, Niko Sigur, already booked for simulation, nearly scored with a header off a corner kick in the 85th minute, though the ball went just wide. Troyes had their best late chance in stoppage time, with Ifnaoui again shooting from outside the box without success. The referee added four minutes at the end, but the scoreboard didn't budge.

What the numbers say

Possession clearly belonged to Toulouse, who completed more than double the passes of their opponents, though that dominance never translated into a clear edge in genuine scoring chances.

According to our xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match, Toulouse generated 0.486 expected goals to Troyes' 0.366, a minimal difference that confirms that despite having more of the ball, the home side couldn't build clear scoring advantages despite its attempts on goal.

The result is quite a departure from what we projected before kickoff: our preview gave Toulouse a 59% chance of winning, a 24% chance of a draw and just 17% for Troyes, with expected goals of 1.95 for the home side and 0.98 for the visitors, a combined total of 2.93. None of that held up: the draw, the least likely outcome according to our model, ended up being the final result.
