Venezia Stuns Napoli on the Counter as De Bruyne Misses Penalty

A goal from Akor Adams right at the start of the second half and a penalty miss by Kevin De Bruyne sealed a surprise home win despite Napoli's dominance.

Venezia Stuns Napoli on the Counter as De Bruyne Misses Penalty

Venezia barely touched the ball, but it only needed the first clean shot of the match to walk away with all three points: 1-0 over Napoli at the Pier Luigi Penzo, courtesy of a goal from Akor Adams just moments into the second half. One counterattack, one cold finish, and ninety minutes of defending later, Davide Nicola's side picked up a win that had eluded them for too many weeks.

The first half had painted a very different picture from how things ended up. Massimiliano Allegri's Napoli controlled the ball almost at will and created several chances from crosses, Lucca with a header, Badiashile also heading one, and a flurry of blocked shots around the 29th minute involving Rrahmani, Di Lorenzo and McTominay, but couldn't break the deadlock. Venezia had its own moments too: Akor Adams tried twice before halftime, one effort grazing the crossbar, and John Yeboah also had a go from outside the box.

The counterattack that decided everything

Play had barely resumed when the moment that changed the match arrived. In the 48th minute, Simon Sohm found Akor Adams on a quick transition and the forward finished with his right foot, low, just inside the left post, for the 1-0. It was the first and only goal of the afternoon, and it was enough to make everything that followed, despite Napoli's persistence, crash against the home side's goal.

And persist Napoli did. Allegri moved quickly on the bench, sending on Rasmus Højlund, Alisson Santos and Kevin De Bruyne in one go at the 53rd minute for Lucca, Giovane and Gilmour, looking for an immediate answer. The visitors found a golden chance in the 65th minute when Matías Moreno fouled Højlund inside the box for a penalty. But Kevin De Bruyne, tasked with leveling the match from twelve yards, struck it with his right foot and Venezia's goalkeeper guessed the right way, pushing it away low. The miss stood, and Napoli kept pushing without reward: Alisson Santos, Scott McTominay, Matteo Politano, Di Lorenzo and even Badiashile all tried their luck in the closing minutes, but none of it crossed the line.

What the numbers say

The stats paint a picture of Napoli dominance that never translated into goals. Venezia had the ball just 29.3% of the time and closed out the match with almost surgical efficiency.

The estimated xG based on the match's shots backs that up: Napoli generated 2.60 expected goals to Venezia's 0.68. That's a wide gap, the kind that usually ends in an away win, but soccer doesn't always hand out points based on volume of play, and this time the team that created the least was the one that walked away with the result.

The preview had pointed clearly in that direction: our projection gave Napoli a 54% chance of winning, against just 20% for Venezia and 26% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.76 for the visitors compared to 1.01 for the home side. The result ended up contradicting that forecast from start to finish: the underdog won, and did so without needing to control a single stretch of the match.

What the result means

For Venezia, who came into this match at the bottom of the table, the win snaps a run of poor results so far this season: their record in the league now stands at one win, no draws and six losses. For Napoli, the stumble leaves them with three wins, one draw and three losses, in ninth place, seven points off the leader in this table's group. Kevin De Bruyne's missed penalty will stand as the lasting image of an afternoon in which Napoli tried almost everything except the one thing that mattered most: scoring.
