Despite overwhelming control of possession and shots, Elche couldn't break down a Celta Vigo side that held firm to seal a 0-0 draw at Martinez Valero.

Elche dominates but can't find a way past Celta as Martinez Valero stays scoreless

Neither Elche nor Celta Vigo budged from 0-0 at Martinez Valero, and the scoreline leaves the impression of two teams that canceled each other out more than they actually attacked. Elche had the ball, controlled territory and got into the opposing box more often, but lacked the finishing touch where it mattered most: only two of its thirteen shots found the frame. Celta, with far less possession, weathered the storm and walked away with the draw without any serious scares in front of its own goal.

The match hit its best stretch in the opening quarter of an hour. Gonzalo Villar tested the keeper with a left-footed effort that was comfortably saved, and shortly after, Ruben Sanchez cracked a shot off the crossbar that could have changed the course of the game. Thomas Lemar, in that same sequence, failed to connect on a clear chance after a cross into the box. Celta answered with an attempt from Ferran Jutgla that went just wide after an assist from Ilaix Moriba, the visitors' clearest chance of the entire first half.

In the second half, Elche kept pressing down the flanks: Roy Revivo and Marc Aguado combined for a couple of shots from the center of the box without luck, and late on, Lucas Cepeda and Ruben Sanchez each tried their luck again without success. Celta, for its part, found its best chance of the match as the clock wound down, with a shot from Couhaib Driouech that flew narrowly wide of the right post after a headed cross from Williot Swedberg. It was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock in the second half, but it didn't go in either.

What the numbers say

Elche's dominance in possession was overwhelming, though it never translated into a clear edge on the scoreboard. The estimated expected goals generated during the match, calculated after the fact from the shots taken, leave the home side only slightly ahead: 0.71 to Celta's 0.47, a gap that confirms neither team created much real danger despite the territorial dominance.

Before kickoff, our projection had Celta as a slight favorite, with a 38% chance of an away win compared to 33% for Elche and 29% for a draw, with combined expected goals of 2.73. What actually played out on the field looked a lot more like the draw scenario than the away win our model flagged as most likely, and it certainly fell well short of those nearly three combined projected goals.

The result leaves Elche in 17th place with 6 points from 8 games played, while Celta Vigo sits on 8 points, also from 8 matches, just 2 points ahead in the LaLiga standings. Neither side managed the breakthrough it needed to pull away from the relegation zone, and the shared point leaves both clubs practically where they stood before kickoff.
