Elche comes back with ten men and routs a wasteful Espanyol 1-3

Playing with ten men for nearly the entire match, Elche left the RCDE Stadium with a 1-3 win that leaves Espanyol with more questions than answers. Referee Jon Ander González Esteban showed a red card to Federico Redondo just moments into the game, reviewed it with VAR, and still sent him off in the 5th minute. Even so, Martín Anselmi's side walked away with all three points in LaLiga.

The opening sequence was a roller coaster: in the 4th minute it was announced that Redondo's red card had been overturned, but a minute later the midfielder was sent off anyway. With a man down, the logical expectation was for Espanyol to take control of the scoreline. The opposite happened.

Fer Niño strikes twice in two minutes

Elche, outnumbered on the field but lethal in the box, struck twice in just three minutes. In the 25th minute, Fer Niño tapped in with his left foot off a pass from Roy Revivo to make it 0-1. Three minutes later, in the 28th minute, Fer Niño struck again, this time with his right foot from point-blank range, once more assisted by Revivo, for 0-2. Two quick blows that left the home side facing an uphill battle despite playing with an extra man.

The first half ended 0-2, with Espanyol dominating possession but failing to turn it into goals: attempts from Edu Expósito, Unai Núñez and Bryan Zaragoza were undone by poor finishing or by the visiting goalkeeper.

The own goal that raised hopes, and the final blow

In the second half, Espanyol pushed on with substitutions (Hartman, Marcos Fernández, Pere Milla, Dolan and Riedel all came on) and got a reward in the 71st minute, when an own goal from Víctor Chust made it 1-2 and brought tension to the RCDE Stadium. It looked like the moment for the comeback.

But Elche answered with a lightning counterattack. In the 77th minute, after a quick transition, Germán Valera finished with his left foot, assisted by Tete Morente, to seal the final 1-3. The home side had no time or answers left to respond, despite late attempts from Dolan and Javier Morcillo.

The numbers behind the match

Espanyol dominated possession and overall play by a wide margin, but lacked precision where it mattered most.

That explains the result: 23 shots for the home side compared to just 9 for Elche, but only 4 of Espanyol's attempts were on target, against 6 for the visitors, who were far more efficient with fewer chances. Our estimate of xG generated in the match ends up nearly even, 1.313 for Espanyol versus 1.297 for Elche, which suggests the scoreline ended up more lopsided than the run of play indicated, and that Elche converted with an efficiency the volume of chances didn't foreshadow.

Our preview gave Espanyol a 43% chance of winning, 29% for a draw and 28% for an Elche win, with expected total goals of 2.56. The result ended up contradicting that forecast: despite playing almost the entire match with a numerical advantage, Espanyol fell by two goals to the side our model gave the least chance of winning.
