Elche sinks Rayo with two penalties in twelve minutes, wins 0-3 at Vallecas
Redondo and Fer Niño converted penalties before halftime and Germán Valera sealed the 0-3 for an Elche side that was far more clinical than Rayo Vallecano.

Two penalties in barely twelve minutes of the first half were enough for Elche to walk away with all three points from the Estadio de Vallecas. The final score, 0-3, left Rayo Vallecano without an answer and with a bitter taste: at no point in the match could they turn around what had already been settled before halftime.
The match began with Rayo pressing hard on the opposing goal. Unai López tested the woodwork early with a shot that whistled just wide of the top corner, and Adrià Pedrosa also had a clear chance that sailed over the bar. But everything changed in the 23rd minute: Florian Lejeune fouled Roy Revivo inside the box, and Federico Redondo made no mistake from the spot, sending a low shot just inside the left post for the 0-1. Elche repeated the trick shortly after: in the 31st minute, Pathé Ciss brought down Thomas Lemar in the area, the referee reviewed the play on VAR and confirmed a second penalty for Elche. This time Fer Niño stepped up, again placing a low shot just inside the left post, to make it 0-2 in the 35th minute.
Rayo had a chance to pull one back before the break when Buba Sangaré handled the ball inside the box in the 36th minute, but Pathé Ciss himself, the very player who had conceded the second penalty, smashed his effort off the crossbar. That miss seemed to deflate the home side, who went into the locker room down 0-2 despite having created several chances of their own, including efforts from Lucas Cepeda and Gonzalo Villar for Elche that also gave the home defense a scare.
The clincher
In the second half Rayo tried to respond with substitutions and a few forays from Giorgi Tsitaishvili and Pedro Díaz, but Elche managed the spaces well and found a third goal in the 67th minute: Germán Valera finished with his left foot from inside the box, just inside the left post, after an assist from Facundo Buonanotte, who had come on at halftime. The 0-3 held firm even as Rayo kept pushing, with Florian Lejeune trying his luck from outside the box on several occasions, including one in stoppage time that drew a strong save from the visiting goalkeeper.
By the numbers
Rayo controlled the ball more and put up a higher volume of shots, but Elche was far more precise in the final third.
| Stat | Rayo Vallecano | Elche |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 56.8 | 43.2 |
| Shots | 18 | 16 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 9 |
| Corners | 3 | 3 |
| Passes | 493 | 388 |
| Fouls committed | 15 | 11 |
According to our post-match xG estimate based on the shots taken in the game, Elche generated 2.551 expected goals against Rayo's 1.435, a gap that reflects how the scoreline ultimately played out even though the home side had more shots overall.
The result ran counter to what we projected beforehand: we gave Rayo Vallecano a 47% chance of winning, against just 24% for Elche, with a draw at 29%. We also expected a tighter match in terms of expected goals, with 1.51 for Rayo and 1.04 for Elche. None of that showed up on the field: the penalties decided the match before halftime, and Elche ended up being far more efficient.
What it means in the standings
Heading into the match, Rayo Vallecano had a record of 2 wins, 3 draws and 4 losses in LaLiga this season, while Elche had 2 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses. The two sides were separated by just 1 point in the table before this game, and today's defeat leaves Rayo in an even tighter spot near the bottom of the standings, while Elche gets some breathing room with a win on the road that carries real weight.
