Elversberg Storms Back with Stoppage-Time Winner to Stun Mönchengladbach 3-4
Maurice Krattenmacher scored twice as Elversberg completed a stunning comeback, proving more clinical in the key moments despite seeing less of the ball.
Borussia-Park saw a bit of everything on Saturday: headed goals, a lethal counterattack, a direct free kick into the top corner, and finally another counter that settled everything in the 91st minute. Borussia Mönchengladbach had climbed to a 3-1 lead and let it slip away. Elversberg, with Maurice Krattenmacher on the scoresheet twice, walked away with a 3-4 win that counts for just as much in the Bundesliga table as any blowout victory.
The home side started the better of the two. Hugo Bolin opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a close-range header off a corner, and Tim Kleindienst had already come close moments earlier with a shot that sailed just over the bar. But Elversberg wasted little time hitting back: in the 28th minute, David Mokwa equalized on a counterattack set up by Lukas Pinckert, a sign of things to come as the visitors made the most of every gap left behind the home defense.
Bolin struck again right before the break, in the 43rd minute, with a low shot from the middle of the box set up by Franck Honorat, sending Mönchengladbach into the locker room up 2-1. The lead grew right at the start of the second half: Joe Scally, also fed by Honorat on another counter, made it 3-1 in the 55th minute. At that point, everything pointed toward the home side's first joy of the season.
Elversberg's turnaround
But the match flipped on its head in barely a quarter of an hour. In the 65th minute, Krattenmacher, who had already rattled the crossbar moments earlier, scored from close range to make it 3-2. Then in the 79th minute, Felix Keidel leveled things with a direct free kick that flew into the top corner, leaving the home goalkeeper with no chance: 3-3. Mönchengladbach, who had controlled much of the match, began to feel the pinch of the space they were leaving at the back.
The decisive blow came in stoppage time. In the 91st minute, with the match already deep into added time, Noel Futkeu sprung another counterattack and set up Krattenmacher, who finished with his right foot to make it a final 3-4. There was no time left for anything else.
What the numbers say
Mönchengladbach had more possession and more shots, but Elversberg was sharper when it mattered most. The match stats sum up that gap nicely:
| Stat | Mönchengladbach | Elversberg |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 51.3 | 48.7 |
| Shots | 25 | 14 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 10 |
| Big chances | 2 | 5 |
| Corners | 13 | 4 |
| Fouls committed | 18 | 9 |
The shots on target and big chances numbers tell a lot of the story: Elversberg generated a smaller volume of shots but a much more dangerous one. According to our xG estimate based on the match's shots, Mönchengladbach racked up 2.95 while Elversberg posted 3.42, a figure that backs up what played out on the field: the visitors were the more clinical side in the key moments, even without controlling the ball.
What the result means
In the standings, the contrast is striking. Elversberg came into this match with wins in each of its first two outings and picked up a third that keeps it near the top, while Mönchengladbach remains pointless after a second straight defeat. The six-point gap between the two sides in the table before kickoff already hinted at two very different starts to the season, and today's result only widened that gap further.
For Mönchengladbach, the problem was not creating chances: the 25 shots and territorial dominance were there for all to see. The problem was holding onto the lead against an opponent that found the net practically every time it touched the ball in the attacking third. For Elversberg, on the other hand, this match confirms it can come from behind and win even on the road and with less possession, no small feat in a league as demanding as the Bundesliga.
