Elversberg stuns Leverkusen with three first-half goals, holds off late rally to win 3-2
The home side struck three times in the opening eight minutes and withstood a second-half Leverkusen surge to pull off an unexpected Bundesliga win.

Eight minutes. That's all SV 07 Elversberg needed to put Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the ropes and set up a victory that finished 3-2 at the URSAPHARM-Arena an der Kaiserlinde. Lukas Petkov opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a shot from outside the box, and just a minute later Cole Campbell made it two from inside the area. Leverkusen, who arrived as the heavy Bundesliga favorite, found themselves down on the scoreboard before they'd even settled into the match.
David Mokwa extended the lead right at the end of the first half, in the 45th minute, tapping in from close range off a low cross from Petkov near the left post. At 3-0 at the break, the match looked all but decided, but Leverkusen pushed hard in the second half and pulled two goals back late: Patrik Schick, not with his head but with his right foot from the center of the box, scored in the 76th minute off a corner kick, and Christian Kofane added a second in stoppage time, in the 90th minute, to make it 3-2.
A devastating start and a late rally
The story of the match is clear from how it unfolded: Elversberg came out pressing from the first minute and found reward almost immediately. Petkov's goal came off an assist from Francis Onyeka, and Campbell's second was practically a carbon copy, with the home side again attacking down the right side of the visitors' goal. Leverkusen, who controlled the ball for most of the match, couldn't turn that possession into clear chances and went into the break facing an uncomfortable 0-3 scoreline.
The complexion of the game changed after halftime. With Jarell Quansah, Facundo Medina and Christian Kofane coming on at the start of the second half, followed later by Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface, Leverkusen added offensive weight. Schick had several chances before finally converting in the 76th minute, and in stoppage time, after Boniface hit the crossbar, Kofane pounced to score the second with a shot through the middle of the goal. The scare lasted until the very end: in the 95th minute, another Boniface header sailed just wide, and referee Robert Hartmann blew the final whistle with the scoreline already out of reach.
The numbers behind the result
The stats confirm what played out on the field: a dominant Leverkusen in terms of possession but unable to capitalize in time, and an Elversberg side that struck efficiently at just the right moments.
| Stat | Elversberg | Leverkusen |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 32.6 | 67.4 |
| Shots | 11 | 21 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 4 |
| Big chances | 2 | 4 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 289 | 583 |
| Fouls committed | 18 | 15 |
The shots-on-target figure sums up the afternoon well: Elversberg took fewer shots but were far more accurate (6 of 11 shots on frame), while Leverkusen fired off 21 shots and only found the target with 4. According to our post-match estimate based on shot location, the match's xG favored Leverkusen (3.065 against 1.569 for Elversberg), suggesting the visitors generated more danger than they ultimately converted into goals, while the home side made the most of what little it had.
A forecast that didn't hold up
The preview we published ahead of the match gave Leverkusen a 54% chance of winning, against 21% for Elversberg and 25% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.93 for the visitors against 1.16 for the home side. Reality turned out to be exactly the opposite: the side given less of a chance went up 3-0 before the match even reached the half-hour mark, and although Leverkusen clawed back in the closing stretch, it wasn't enough to avoid defeat.
With this result, Elversberg sits on 3 points in the standings after one match played, with a win and a positive goal difference, while Leverkusen remain pointless after their opening fixture. The gap between the two sides in the table, just one match into the Bundesliga season, already stands at 3 points. What this match leaves behind is a lesson in how a strong start can outweigh possession and volume of play over 90 minutes.
