Enzo Fernández faces PSG again, this time as a Manchester City player
On Wednesday at the Etihad, the Argentine midfielder squares off against Luis Enrique's team for a sixth time, with a final won and a knockout tie lost in the recent history between them.

Some opponents keep showing up so often in a player's career that they end up telling their own story within the bigger story. That is what has happened to Enzo Fernández with PSG. He has already faced them five times between Benfica and Chelsea, and on Wednesday, October 14, a sixth chapter gets added, this time in a different jersey: Manchester City's, at the Etihad Stadium, for matchday two of the UEFA Champions League. The match can be watched starting at 4:00 p.m. (ARG/URU/CHI) and 2:00 p.m. (COL/PER/ECU) on Disney+'s Premium Plan for South America.
The history between Enzo and PSG has a bit of everything: a final won convincingly and a knockout tie lost painfully. On July 13, 2025, at the MetLife Stadium, Chelsea routed Luis Enrique's side 3-0 in the Club World Cup final, with two goals from Cole Palmer and one from João Pedro. Fernández started, playing in an advanced midfield role, and was a key piece in a plan that suffocated PSG from the opening whistle. After the match, he explained it this way:
The plan worked out perfectly. What Enzo (Maresca) asked for while preparing over these last three days before the game, it showed up in training. We pressed very high and very well, we went man to man, and I think we were deserving winners.Enzo Fernández
Months later, the story flipped. On March 11, 2026, already in the Champions League round of 16, PSG hosted Chelsea at the Parc des Princes and Enzo scored to make it 2-2 at the time, finishing with his right foot inside the box. It was not enough: the match ended 5-2 for the hosts, and a week later at Stamford Bridge, PSG won again, 3-0, to seal a resounding 8-2 aggregate. Fernández played both legs and wore the captain's armband in the second one. Once the tie was over, he was self-critical:
I think we failed to control the game. In the first match we lost concentration in the last 15 minutes and conceded three goals, and here it happened at the start. At this level you cannot concede two goals that quickly because of small details. In the end, over both matches, PSG was better and deserves to go through.Enzo Fernández
A rival he already knew from Lisbon
The history with PSG actually goes back further, to the 2022/23 Champions League, when Enzo had just arrived in European soccer with Benfica and faced the team of Messi, Mbappé and Neymar twice: a 1-1 draw in Lisbon and another 1-1 in Paris, with Benfica finishing first in the group on goal difference. Years later he would look back on it as part of his growth, before he had even shared a locker room with Messi on the national team and won the World Cup alongside him.
Now the scenery is completely different. Enzo joined City for 145 million euros, the highest fee ever paid in Premier League history, signed through 2031, and reunited with Enzo Maresca, the coach who got the best out of him at Chelsea. The player himself summed it up like this:
He's a top coach, honestly. I had him at my previous club and those were incredible times. I learned so much from him. He's a lot like Latinos, he's very passionate, and for me it's a pleasure to work with him.Enzo Fernández
Maresca was the one who gave him more freedom to get into the box, and Fernández himself admits it changed the way he plays: "Now I like getting into the box and scoring goals." In his Champions League debut with City against Porto, a 2-0 win, he played all 90 minutes, provided an assist, and posted 94% passing accuracy while covering nearly 12 kilometers.
On the other side stands a PSG side showing no signs of letting up. Luis Enrique made that clear after winning the Champions League: "We want to keep writing history because we believe there is still more for us to achieve." History guarantees nothing, but between the 3-0 final and the goal in Paris, Enzo arrives knowing exactly where he can hurt the champions of Europe.
