Enzo Fernandez leaves Chelsea for Manchester City in $146 million move

Just two and a half years ago, Enzo Fernandez arrived in London in the dead of January to take charge of the midfield for a Chelsea side searching for a rebuild. Now he's packing his bags again, but this time the destination is Manchester, and the fee he leaves behind is staggering: 146 million euros (about 125 million pounds, roughly 169 million dollars), one of the priciest deals the sport has ever seen.

The Argentine midfielder will sign a six-year contract with Manchester City, with an option to extend the deal by one more year, running through 2033. That's an extraordinarily long commitment for a player who hasn't yet turned 25 and already has a World Cup with the Argentina national team to his name.

His time at Chelsea was no small chapter: he made 169 appearances and scored 31 goals, picking up two major trophies along the way, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League. Now Pep Guardiola adds him to a midfield in need of refreshing, paying a fee that even City itself had never approached before.

A transfer window that keeps shattering records

And City had already made waves this window. Just weeks earlier, the club had smashed its own transfer record by paying 135 million euros for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. With Enzo Fernandez, that ceiling has been pushed even higher.

For context: the fee City is paying matches what Liverpool spent on Alexander Isak when he left Newcastle, and it ranks among the highest transfer fees in history, though it still falls short of the record set by PSG for Neymar in 2017 (222 million euros) or what the French club paid for Kylian Mbappe (180 million euros, in a deal completed in two stages between 2017 and 2018).

River Plate cashes in again

As often happens with players who came up through its academy, River Plate isn't left out of the deal. Through training compensation, which amounts to 3.5% of the transfer fee, the Nunez based club will receive close to 5.8 million dollars, expected to be paid out within the next 30 days.

Adding up everything Enzo has generated for River across his various transfers, to Benfica, to Chelsea and now to Manchester City, the total comes to roughly 65 million dollars. It's a reminder of just how much well negotiated sales of academy products can pay off over time.

The transfer market also brought River another payday this week: 2.3 million dollars from the transfer of Exequiel Palacios to Premier League side Ipswich Town. Between one deal and another, the club's coffers keep growing thanks to the players it developed.
