Enzo Fernández stays at Chelsea as $161.8 million deadline passes with no formal bids

Friday came and went, and with it the expiration of a deadline that seemed to have half the Premier League and Madrid glued to their phones. Nobody called with the right number. So, with no formal offers on the table, Enzo Fernández is staying at Chelsea, at least for now.

According to information obtained by ESPN, the Blues had set a price and a deadline: 120 million pounds (roughly $161.8 million) before this Friday. Nobody, not Manchester City, not Real Madrid, the two clubs most heavily linked throughout the window, was willing to pay it. That was the condition the club itself had verbally set for the player and his camp to even consider a departure.

The detail matters given how this all started. Back in May, ESPN had reported that Chelsea would demand that figure if the Argentine midfielder pushed to leave, something Enzo himself had hinted at early in the window. But there's a long distance between pushing for a move and a formal offer actually showing up, and that distance was never closed.

With the deadline now passed, the club's stance is clear: they expect Fernández, 25, to complete the full season at Stamford Bridge, ruling out any move in the upcoming January window. The player is under contract until 2032, so Chelsea faces no contractual urgency. What's more, the club paid Benfica 107 million pounds for him back in February 2023, and wants to turn a profit whenever it does sell.

City's move tied to what happens with Rodri

Does the story end there? Not necessarily. City's interest in Enzo hinges on what happens with their own midfielder, Rodri, who has already turned down two offers from Barcelona but has just one year left on his contract and hasn't ruled out a departure. If Rodri leaves, City could come back for the Argentine later in the window.

That's where Enzo Maresca comes in, the coach who managed Fernández at Chelsea through the 2024/25 season and much of 2025/26, winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup with him before being let go. Maresca now sits on City's bench, having succeeded Pep Guardiola, and his relationship with the player remains good. Asked about it on Friday, he preferred not to get into specifics:

No, at this moment, again, I have to give you the same answer as day one. It will always be the same: he's a player from another club, and I don't think it's right to talk about players from other teams, just as I don't think it's right for other clubs to talk about our players. Asked whether City would move on any signing that same day, he was just as direct: "Not today, to be honest. I don't think we'll do anything today."

On Real Madrid's side, Fernández's name also came up frequently, largely because of the admiration José Mourinho reportedly has for the midfielder. However, the Spanish club had already made clear last month that it would not be submitting offers during this window. With both of those doors closed for now, Enzo Fernández starts the season exactly where nobody expected the summer to end: at Chelsea.
