Erik Lira breaks his silence on failed Monaco move

Two months spent living between hope and uncertainty. That's how Erik Lira sums up the negotiation process with AS Monaco, a transfer that was on the table but ultimately never came together. The Cruz Azul captain didn't hold anything back on the subject during the press conference ahead of the final against Inter Miami for the Campeones Cup, speaking with the calm of someone who has already turned the page.

"Those were two pretty tough months on a personal level, but I owe everything to Cruz Azul, I'm very grateful to the club, to Joel (Huiqui), to my teammates. Things didn't work out for a reason, and that reason is that I'm here and we have a final tomorrow," Lira explained, making clear the episode is behind him and that all his energy is now focused on the sky blue squad.

The midfielder didn't hold back his gratitude toward the club that has backed him since he was a player with little experience in the top flight. "I'm extremely happy, committed, grateful to belong to Cruz Azul because from day one they believed in me when I wasn't yet an established player in Liga MX," he said.

Grateful to Monaco, but with eyes on Europe

Even though the move didn't happen, the French club's interest wasn't for nothing. Both Carlos Aviña, sporting director, and Filipe Luis, Monaco's coach, had publicly stated that they would keep an eye on Lira's development and that they don't rule out reopening talks down the road. Lira himself responded to those comments with a message of appreciation.

Total gratitude to Filipe and Carlos for looking at Cruz Azul, and especially at me. I want to thank them, and I'm going to keep working on my end. I realized that maybe I wasn't quite ready yet, or there were things missing, so I'm going to work, I am working on it. The final against Inter Miami brings an extra incentive for Lira: the chance to go up against Lionel Messi, a player he has admired since childhood. Still, respect doesn't mean resignation, and the captain made that very clear.
