Erik López scores winner as Municipal edges Comunicaciones in capital derby

The clock showed minute 45+2 and it looked like clásico number 338 was headed to halftime scoreless. Then came the play that decided everything: Aubrey David joined the attack, found Jefry Bantes, who answered with a backheel to spring Erik López free, and the forward made no mistake with a powerful strike that beat Fredy Pérez. That blow, delivered right before the teams headed to the locker rooms, was enough for CSD Municipal to take a 0-1 win over Comunicaciones FC at the Estadio Cementos Progreso, in matchday six of the Torneo Apertura 2026.

The match had opened with intensity from the first minute, as usually happens when these two historic rivals meet. Coach Mario Acevedo shuffled his starting lineup from recent games, but that didn't stop his side from being the first to cause trouble: Dominican forward Erick Japa received a pass from Pedro Altán and his shot went just wide of the post. Comunicaciones answered through Dairon Reyes, who also came close without luck.

The night took a turn for the reds in the 21st minute, when Japa went down injured after a challenge with Cuban defender Karel Espino and had to be carried off on a stretcher. Jefry Bantes came on and, as it turned out, ended up playing a key role in the winning goal. Before that stroke of luck for Municipal, Comunicaciones had chances of their own: Omar Duarte went one on one with goalkeeper Kenderson Navarro in the 35th minute but couldn't beat him, and shortly after Jonathan Moncada tried his luck from outside the box without success.

A second half of holding on

With the narrow lead on the scoreboard, both coaches turned to their benches. Marco Antonio Figueroa brought on Diego Santis, Nelso Iván García and Emerson García in search of the equalizer, while Acevedo responded with Cristián Hernández and Yunior Pérez to protect the result. Past the 70th minute, Hernández himself had a clear chance after beating a Municipal defender, but his cross shot went just wide.

In the closing stretch, Municipal came close to putting the game away: José Carlos Martínez broke forward on the counter, left Marco Domínguez behind and set up Jhon Méndez, whose angled shot was blocked by Fredy Pérez with his foot.

With this win in the capital derby, Municipal moves to 15 points and takes over first place in the Torneo Apertura 2026 after piling up five wins in six matchdays. Comunicaciones, meanwhile, remains outside the qualification zone: they sit seventh with 7 points, the product of two wins, one draw and three losses. For the "cremas," the task now is to react quickly before the gap to the top of the table grows any wider.
