Eriksen terminates Wolfsburg contract following June collapse

Four months after the scare that stopped his heart in the middle of a friendly, Christian Eriksen is closing his chapter in Germany. The club confirmed on Wednesday that the Danish midfielder and Wolfsburg agreed to terminate the contract that had tied them together through June 2027.

The news, sad as it is, doesn't come as much of a surprise once you look back at what happened on June 7. Eriksen, 34, clutched his chest and collapsed during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in Odense. He hasn't played since. Four months of silence, rehabilitation and, in the end, a decision that seems to be about life more than football.

Eriksen himself explained why he'd rather bring the curtain down at Wolfsburg right now:

The incident against Ukraine inevitably brought back a memory that every soccer fan has burned into their mind: Eriksen's collapse at Euro 2021, when his teammates formed a human circle around him as he received medical attention on the field. This time, the scene had a different ending: he was able to walk off under his own power to the edge of the pitch before being taken to the hospital.

Back in June, Eriksen had tried to put everyone at ease, saying he was feeling "fine" and that the implantable defibrillator he's carried since that 2021 episode had done its job. Since then, he's focused on his recovery in Denmark, away from the field and, it seems, with his mind more on his family than on the ball.

A step back in an already difficult season

Eriksen had joined Wolfsburg as a free agent ahead of the 2025-26 season, arriving after a career path that included stops at clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The campaign itself was far from easy for the German side, which ended up getting relegated from the Bundesliga.

Now, with the contract terminated, the Dane's playing future is up in the air. What is clear, in his own words, is that his priority today isn't the stadiums but being close to his loved ones.
