Estonia and Iceland Play Out Scoreless Draw in Back-and-Forth Nations League Clash
Despite Iceland's dominance in possession and Estonia's sharper finishing, neither side could break the deadlock at A. Le Coq Arena, with Iceland finishing top of Group C4.

The scoreboard stayed blank, but not for lack of trying. Estonia and Iceland played to a 0-0 draw at A. Le Coq Arena in a Group C4 clash in the UEFA Nations League that featured shots, corners and even a ball clipping the woodwork, but nothing that crossed the line.
The match opened at a quick pace from the first minute, with early fouls and end-to-end play that gave neither side a breather. Mikael Anderson tested things early for Iceland, in just the 7th minute, with a shot that went wide down the right side off a counterattack. Estonia answered almost immediately: in the 8th minute Rasmus Peetson forced a high save through the middle, and a minute later Markus Poom tried his luck from outside the box, though the visiting defense managed to clear it.
Iceland also had its chances in the air. Victor Palsson and Andri Gudjohnsen both tried headers off corners between the 11th and 14th minutes, without luck in front of goal. The hosts, for their part, kept pushing through Robi Saarma and Markus Poom, who both came close without finding the target. Estonia's best chance of the first half came in the 41st minute, when Peetson forced a save that grazed the left corner of the goal.
That stretch also brought the match's first caution: Daniel Gretarsson picked up a yellow card for dangerous play in the 24th minute. The first half ended scoreless, with both goalkeepers tested but neither goal giving way.
A Second Half Tilted Toward Iceland, but No Reward
The second half followed the same script of chances shared between both sides. Estonia made an early move from the bench, bringing on Michael Schjonning-Larsen, Karel Mustmaa and Mattias Kait all at once in the 60th minute. Just two minutes later, Kait and Saarma tried their luck with a header and a left-footed effort, neither finding the net.
Iceland gained ground as the clock wound down, backed by a possession share that ended up clearly in their favor. Hakon Haraldsson forced another fine save in the 81st minute, with a shot that also grazed the left corner of the goal. Deep into stoppage time, Brynjolfur Willumsson had two chances back to back, in the 90th and 91st minutes, neither finding its mark. The referee blew the final whistle after two minutes of added time, with the score still level.
What the Numbers Say
Iceland controlled possession and set pieces, but Estonia was sharper in front of goal, even if it couldn't find the breakthrough.
| Stat | Estonia | Iceland |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 38 | 62 |
| Shots | 13 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 1 |
| Corners | 3 | 7 |
| Passes | 361 | 583 |
| Fouls committed | 10 | 9 |
The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots comes out nearly even: 0.89 for Estonia versus 0.82 for Iceland, a figure that reflects just how tight the contest was despite the visitors' territorial edge.
The pre-match numbers told a different story. Our projection gave Estonia a 29% chance of winning, 36% for a draw and 35% for Iceland, with expected goals of 0.86 for the hosts and 0.98 for the visitors. The final result, with the draw as the outcome, ended up being the scenario our model had marked as the most likely of the three.
Where the Group Stands
The draw leaves Iceland atop Group C4 with 8 points from 4 matches played, the product of 2 wins and 2 draws, with no losses. Estonia stays in second with 6 points, after 1 win and 3 draws, also unbeaten. The gap between the two sits at 2 points. Further back, Bulgaria has 4 points and Luxembourg rounds out the table with 3.
Neither team left A. Le Coq Arena with everything it wanted, but neither walked away beaten either. For Estonia, taking a point off the group leader without conceding has its merits; for Iceland, the constant pressure in the second half wasn't enough to break down a rival that held firm until the end.
