Estoril and Arouca Share the Points in a Flat Scoreless Draw Despite Plenty of Chances

Eight shots on target from Estoril, eight corners in its favor, and not a single goal to show for all that insistence. The match at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota ended 0-0 between Estoril and Arouca, a result that leaves both sides with the sense that something got away from them, though for different reasons.

The preview we published ahead of the match projected a game with goals: 1.85 expected goals for Estoril and 1.61 for Arouca, with a 42% chance of a home win, 33% for the visitors, and just 25% for a draw. None of that played out. What we saw was exactly the least likely scenario under that projection, and even looking at the match's own numbers, an estimated xG of 1.545 for Estoril and 1.823 for Arouca, it's hard to call the scoreless result unjust either: there were plenty of chances for either side to walk away with all three points.

A First Half Full of Attempts, Short on Reward

Estoril got ahead in the corner count almost from the start, with consecutive corner kicks in the 7th and 9th minutes, and tested the opposing goalkeeper through Jordan Holsgrove, who forced a save from distance as early as the 3rd minute. Arouca answered through Pablo Gozálbez and Naïs Djouahra, the latter clipping the crossbar on a direct free kick in the 30th minute and testing the woodwork again two minutes later. André Lacximicant also had a headed attempt for Estoril in the 26th minute, but the visiting goalkeeper was equal to it. The only blemish on the opening stretch was a yellow card for Antef Tsoungui in the 29th minute for dangerous play, and the match went into the break scoreless despite the back-and-forth action.

Antef Tsoungui did not return for the second half: Jordan Arnolin came on in his place, while Arouca also made a change, bringing on Pedro Santos for Espen van Ee.

The Second Half: Estoril Pushes the Pace

The second half followed the same script: plenty of football between the boxes but little precision in front of goal. Estoril strung together a string of chances (João Carvalho, Ismael Sierra, Yanis Begraoui) that kept finding an answer either from the Arouca goalkeeper or the woodwork itself, like João Carvalho's shot in the 73rd minute that grazed the top corner. Arouca did not sit back either: Barbero tried a header in the 58th minute, and Brian Mansilla, on as a substitute, forced a big save in the 85th. With yellow cards piling up (Jordan Arnolin, João Carvalho and Brian Mansilla all joined the list), the match grew increasingly feisty without losing any of its attacking intensity.

The closing stretch was the most frantic part of the match: between the 83rd and 92nd minutes, with both sides having used up their substitutions, there were shots from Jordan Holsgrove, Pedro Carvalho, Rafik Guitane, Tiago Brito, Ismael Sierra and Fernando Medrano, all from Estoril, which threw everything forward in search of a goal during stoppage time (three added minutes were played) without ever breaking the deadlock.

What the Numbers Say

Estoril was sharper in front of goal, 18 shots to 12, with eight of them on target, but Arouca controlled the ball more and was more efficient in not wasting as many clear chances.

What the Draw Means in the Standings

In the Liga Portugal table, the split of points leaves Arouca in fifth place with 10 points after five matches played (three wins, one draw and one loss), while Estoril remains 17th with just 2 points, the product of two draws and three losses in its five outings. The gap between the two sides in the standings is 8 points, one this draw did nothing to close for the home side, which needed the three points far more urgently than its opponent.

In the end, the scoreless result leaves a bittersweet taste: Estoril can rue not converting its dominance in shots into something more concrete, while Arouca takes away a point that, while not the result our projections favored before kickoff, doesn't push it too far from its goals in the tournament either.
