Estrela and Famalicao share a 2-2 draw as Koutsias nets a brace in Liga Portugal

Koutsias needed just a minute to put Estrela in trouble. The Famalicao forward struck with his right foot from the center of the box, after a through ball from Mathias de Amorim, making it 0-1 almost before the home side had settled in. The match, however, ended 2-2 at Estadio Jose Gomes, with Estrela forced to come from behind twice to salvage that draw in the Liga Portugal.

The first half closed with Famalicao holding onto that narrow lead, having also controlled the ball comfortably. Estrela tried to find a way through the flanks and with crosses into the box (Zvonarek, Antonetti and Marcus all had chances that missed the target), but couldn't break down the visiting defense before halftime.

The second half told a different story. In the 56th minute, Leandro Antonetti tapped in with his right foot from the center of the box off a pass from Beni Souza, making it 1-1. Twelve minutes later, in the 68th, Max Scholze produced an angled strike from the right side of the box that found the far corner, just after Antonetti himself had rattled the post. Suddenly Estrela led 2-1 and looked set to claim all three points at home.

But Famalicao answered from the penalty spot. In the 78th minute, Robinho brought down Rodrigo Pinheiro inside the box, and a minute later Koutsias made no mistake, driving a low shot into the corner again close to the left post to complete his brace and make it a final 2-2. There were no further goals despite chances for Gil Dias, Oscar Aranda and Abraham Marcus in the closing minutes.

Even numbers, with more possession for Famalicao

The stats paint a picture of a fairly even contest, though Famalicao carried more of the play.

With Famalicao dominating possession, our estimate of xG generated during the match favors the visitors: 1.635 to Estrela's 1.053. That figure confirms that, despite the scoreline ending level, Famalicao generated somewhat more danger in their attacks.

The preview we published had Famalicao as favorites, giving them a 42% chance of victory against 27% for Estrela and 31% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.33 for the visitors versus 1.02 for the home side. The final result, a four-goal draw with two separate comebacks, ended up matching that draw scenario we also flagged as possible, though the back-and-forth nature of the match itself was far more dramatic than any percentage could have predicted.

Famalicao, meanwhile, remains in 14th place with 3 points, still without a win and with two losses to go along with three draws, including today's result. The gap between the two sides in the table is just 3 points, a margin that makes clear neither has started the season with the solidity they were hoping for.
