FA Charges Chelsea Over Discriminatory Chanting by Fans at Craven Cottage

A 3-2 win that should have left a good taste in everyone's mouth instead opened up an extra headache for the club. The Football Association (FA) has formally charged Chelsea over alleged discriminatory chanting by a section of their fans during the trip to Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 24, on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The match, won by the Stamford Bridge side thanks to goals from João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, ended up being defined by what happened off the pitch. According to the FA, it all took place at a very specific moment: the ninth minute of the game.

The English governing body's statement leaves no doubt about the nature of the charge. "Chelsea FC has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E21 in relation to the ninth minute of their Premier League fixture against Fulham FC on 24 August," the official statement reads. It continues: "It is alleged that the club failed to ensure that its spectators and/or supporters conducted themselves in an orderly fashion, and refrained from acting in a way that was improper, or that used abusive and/or insulting words. It is further alleged that this behavior was discriminatory by way of reference to religion and/or belief, whether express or implied."

What stands out is that Chelsea had already reacted on their own, even before this charge came through. The day after the match, the club sent a direct message to the fans who had been at the stadium, acknowledging that something had gone wrong in the stands.

The club went even further with its warning, making clear it has no intention of looking the other way. In that same message, it reminded fans that "no chanting that discriminates against a protected characteristic is tolerated" and that any supporter identified "will face the strongest possible action, which could include an indefinite ban from attending all Chelsea matches and removal from the stadium."

Not a new problem

The club's own statement suggests this is not the first time it has faced a situation like this. It referred to "previous fines and charges against the club for chanting of this nature," which suggests the problem goes back some time and that the institution has already had to answer financially for similar episodes in the past.

Alongside the warning, there was also a call for collective responsibility. The club asked its fans to get actively involved in the solution: "we ask supporters to take collective responsibility and remain vigilant to help us tackle discriminatory chanting," with the stated goal of "creating a matchday experience that is welcoming for everyone."

Now the matter is in the FA's hands, which will have to resolve this charge under Rule E21. For now, the result of that afternoon at Craven Cottage has taken a back seat to an issue that goes well beyond what happened on the field.
