Facundo Herrera, "Jagger," Makes Starting Debut for Boca and Delivers in 1-0 Win Over Sao Paulo in Copa Sudamericana

There was a long crossfield switch to Alan Velasco that said far more than any stat sheet ever could. It came off the foot of a 20-year-old who, until September 9, 2026, had never started an international match wearing Boca's colors. And he played it like someone who had spent a decade at La Bombonera.

Facundo Herrera, already known throughout the club as Jagger for his resemblance to the Rolling Stones frontman, was one of the standout figures in Boca's 1-0 win over Sao Paulo in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals. It was no ordinary stage for a debut: Rodolfo Arruabarrena handed him a starting spot at center back, and the defender who came up through Boca Predio answered with a level of composure well beyond his years.

The numbers back it up. Herrera finished as the player with the most successful defensive actions in the match, 7, led all players in tackles with 3, and also topped the clearance count with 3, all without committing a single foul. Add to that an 89 percent pass completion rate, connecting on 65 of 73 attempts. Those numbers point to a center back who did not just defend, but also helped drive the ball out from the back.

What stood out most was how he handled marking Jonathan Calleri, a proven forward with plenty of international experience. Across the 82 minutes he spent on the field, Jagger never let the Brazilian striker find real influence inside the box. On top of that, he showed the confidence to play out from the back, linked well with Leonel Flores on a quick breakout, and even threaded a few passes between the lines to help Boca break Sao Paulo's press.

From the moment the stadium announcer first read out his name, Boca fans got behind him, and they stayed behind him through the final whistle. For a player who came up through the academy, that kind of support means something: it is confirmation that he has stopped being just a prospect and has become a real option for the team right now.

In the post-match press conference, Arruabarrena was asked about Herrera's performance and did not hold back the praise, though he chose his words carefully:

The coach also took the moment to ask the media to show some restraint with expectations around the club's young players: "You guys don't help with all the praise. We don't want to burn these kids out. Sometimes you have to give them a hard time a little, about a tattoo or something like that, but then there's social media, everybody gives them grief there, thank God in my day there was no social media."

Boca now turns to Friday's Torneo Clausura match against Central Córdoba, and Arruabarrena will have to work through a familiar dilemma at this stage of the competition: rest his starters with the second leg against Sao Paulo at the Morumbí in mind, or field a mixed lineup. Whatever he decides, Jagger has already made his mark on his first big opportunity.
