Faroe Islands Battle Back to Draw Slovakia After Own-Goal Setback
Despite dominating possession and corners, Slovakia couldn't break down a Faroe Islands side that remains unbeaten with its third straight draw in the Nations League.

Slovakia controlled the ball for nearly the entire match, but ran into a Tórsvøllur side that refused to give an inch. The final score was 1-1, with an own goal putting Slovakia ahead and a Faroese response arriving with just over half an hour left to play. On points, though, this is a result that means far more to the Faroe Islands than to the group leader.
The first half followed the visitors' script: Slovakia piled up chances through corners and second phases, and in the 37th minute it paid off in the worst possible way for the hosts. A ball that ended up in Gunnar Vatnhamar's own net made it 0-1, a fair reflection of how the game had been going: the Faroe Islands were struggling to find any way to relieve the pressure. That scoreline held until halftime, after Jóannes Danielsen picked up a yellow card for dangerous play late in the first half.
In the second half, Slovakia kept pushing forward, with shots from Dávid Duris, Lukás Haraslín and later Tomás Suslov all missing the target. But the home side, with substitutes Adrian Justinussen and Áki Samuelsen now on the field, started creating more chances down the flanks. That persistence paid off in the 65th minute: Justinussen struck with his right foot from outside the box, a low shot that found the corner by the left post to make it 1-1. It was the moment that shifted the mood of the match, even if it didn't shift control of the ball.
Dominance That Didn't Translate Into Victory
The numbers tell the story of a match that was even in clear-cut chances but lopsided in terms of who ran the game. Slovakia held the ball nearly two-thirds of the time and piled up far more corners than their opponent, but both sides finished with the same number of shots and the same number of big chances.
| Stat | Faroe Islands | Slovakia |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 34.4 | 65.6 |
| Shots | 15 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 6 | 4 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Corners | 2 | 10 |
| Passes | 295 | 571 |
| Fouls committed | 12 | 7 |
The shots-on-target column actually favors the Faroe Islands, who were more efficient at hitting the target despite having far less of the ball. Our after-the-fact xG estimate, calculated from shot locations, shows a virtually even contest: 1.355 for Slovakia against 1.288 for the Faroe Islands, a razor-thin margin that backs up just how tight the final result was.
The draw also runs counter to what our pre-match projections suggested. Beforehand we gave Slovakia a 44% chance of winning, versus 22% for the Faroe Islands and 34% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.18 for the visitors and just 0.77 for the hosts. In the end, the scoreline landed closer to the least likely outcome for Slovakia than to the one that had them favored to win.
What It Means in the Standings
The result keeps Slovakia atop Group C3 of the UEFA Nations League, with 7 points from two wins and a draw, still unbeaten in the competition. The Faroe Islands, for their part, add another point: with this draw they move to 3 points from three draws in as many matches, still without a win or a loss this edition. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 4 points, and for the hosts, who can neither win nor lose it seems, every draw they salvage says more about their resilience than their firepower up front.
For Slovakia, the point snaps a run of dominance that never turned into a win, something already hinted at by the even split in clear chances. For the Faroe Islands, though, it's yet another example of a side that knows how to grind out a result and find an equalizer even when the opponent spends nearly the whole match camped in their box.
