Kartal Quits at Press Conference After Getting Hit by Water Bottle, but Yildirim Refuses to Accept It

The coach announced his departure after being struck by a bottle during the match against Roma, but Yildirim was firm: he won't accept the resignation, and Kartal remains in charge of the team.

Kartal Quits at Press Conference After Getting Hit by Water Bottle, but Yildirim Refuses to Accept It

A water bottle. That's how simple, and how absurd, the origin of a crisis can be, one that for a few hours left half of Istanbul wondering who was actually running Fenerbahçe. It all happened on Wednesday night, with the echo of the 1-1 draw against Roma still fresh from the Turkish club's European debut.

The match itself was nothing extraordinary at first. Roma went ahead six minutes before halftime thanks to a goal from Bryan Cristante, and Fenerbahçe looked resigned to opening its Champions League campaign with a home defeat. But early in the second half, Archie Brown stepped up to level things with an assist from Mason Greenwood. A tidy result, nothing shocking, the kind that's usually forgotten fast.

What came next, though, is not something anyone will forget so soon. At the post-match press conference, head coach İsmail Kartal sat down in front of the microphones and, in a tone that left no room for doubt, announced he was stepping down. No hedging: he said he was leaving for good.

Tonight I have left my position. I made this decision to clear the way for my club. I am resigning with no intention of ever coming back. Good night to everyone.İsmail Kartal

The shock was total, starting with his own players, who found out the news at nearly the same time as the press did. But the story still had another twist in store. Minutes later, club president Aziz Yildirim came out to explain what had really happened and to set the record straight: Kartal's resignation, he said, wasn't serious, or at least he had no intention of accepting it.

Yildirim revealed what had set the coach off: during the match, someone had thrown a water bottle at his head. That, he explained, was what left him upset enough to talk about resigning in front of the cameras.

Tonight, someone threw a water bottle at coach İsmail's head. That's the reason for his resignation. That's why he's upset, that's the reason.Aziz Yildirim

The president held nothing back and was blunt about what would happen next: Kartal remained the coach, end of story. He spoke almost like someone settling a family argument, downplaying the institutional weight of the episode and making it clear who was in charge at the club.

İsmail Kartal remains in charge. The club must support our coach. As long as I remain president and don't leave, Kartal is Fenerbahçe's coach. İsmail Kartal doesn't need to say he'll stay. I'm his superior and I tell him "you're staying" and that's that. These things happen within a family. Until I let him go, İsmail Kartal cannot leave here.Aziz Yildirim

It's worth remembering that Kartal's history with Fenerbahçe didn't start yesterday. As a player he spent a decade wearing the shirt, winning two Turkish league titles and three domestic cups during that stretch. As a coach, this is already his fourth spell in charge of the first team, which helps explain why Yildirim talks about him almost like a member of the family.

Archie Brown's Confusion

While all this was unfolding, Archie Brown was still speaking to reporters, completely unaware of what his coach had just announced in another room. It was the club's interpreter who broke the news to him live, and the fullback's reaction was pure disbelief, all caught on camera.

What do you mean he resigned? As coach? He's not the coach anymore? Did he just say that now?Archie Brown

Once he understood what had happened, the player couldn't hide his bewilderment. It was clear Kartal hadn't told the squad anything before facing the microphones, which says a lot about just how improvised, or how hurt, the coach was in that moment. By the end of the night, between a bottle to the head, a resignation announced in a hallway, and a president who wouldn't take no for an answer, Fenerbahçe wrapped up its first Champions League night with more noise off the pitch than on it.
