Fenerbahce and Lyon Share the Points After Lyon's Perfect Start
Loïs Openda put Lyon ahead before the break, but Mason Greenwood leveled early in the second half in an even match.

Fenerbahce and Lyon played to a 1-1 draw at Chobani Stadyumu, in a tight match that Loïs Openda tilted toward the French side before halftime, only for Mason Greenwood to level things almost immediately at the start of the second half. Neither team could find a way to break the deadlock despite the chances created in the second half.
An Early Goal and an Instant Reply
The first half saw chances at both ends: Ruben Kluivert tested Lyon's opponents early on, while Vedat Muriqi answered with a header that grazed the crossbar. Talisca and Tanner Tessmann also caused problems with shots from outside the box, but it was the visitors who struck first. In the 39th minute, Corentin Tolisso whipped in a cross that Loïs Openda headed home from close range to make it 0-1.
Fenerbahce didn't take long to respond. Right at the start of the second half, in the 46th minute, Mason Greenwood finished with his left foot from inside the box after being set up by Kerem Aktürkoglu, drawing the match level. The rest of the second half was intense but goalless: Openda struck the post with a shot, Corentin Tolisso tried twice more, and on the home side, Dorgeles Nene also hit the post on a counterattack. Neither Romelu Lukaku nor Marco Asensio, both introduced from the bench, could change the outcome in the closing minutes.
A Battle of Even Numbers
The stats reflected just how tight the match was. Both teams finished with the same number of shots and shots on target, along with a single clear-cut chance apiece.
| Stat | Fenerbahce | Lyon |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 51.5 | 48.5 |
| Shots | 12 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 5 |
| Big chances | 1 | 1 |
| Passes | 453 | 433 |
| Fouls committed | 13 | 13 |
As for the estimated xG from our model based on the match's shots, Lyon finished with a slight edge of 1.17 compared to Fenerbahce's 0.90, a minimal difference that backs up the sense of balance the game left behind.
What the Preview Said Versus What Happened on the Field
Before the match, our projection gave Fenerbahce a 56% chance of winning, against 15% for Lyon and 29% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.50 for the home side and 0.65 for the visitors. Reality contradicted much of that forecast: it was Lyon that took the lead and generated more attacking danger in terms of xG, while Fenerbahce had to fight back to equalize and couldn't fully tip the scales in its favor despite playing at home.
The Takeaways
The draw leaves mixed impressions: Lyon showed the composure to strike at the right moment and came close to taking all three points with Openda and Tolisso both hitting the post in the second half, while Fenerbahce showed the ability to respond immediately after conceding, though it couldn't turn its slight edge in possession into a decisive advantage on the scoreboard. Both sides will have plenty to review on what they lacked to secure the win in a match that, as the stats confirmed, was an even contest from start to finish.
