Twelve Years Later, Fernando Tapia Finally Makes His America Debut
The goalkeeper from Tabasco finally defended the first team's goal in Matchday 4 against Atletico San Luis under Guillermo Almada.

Twelve years. That's how long Fernando Tapia had to wait from the day he joined America's youth academy until he finally got the chance to defend the first team's goal in an official match. To put it in perspective: when the goalkeeper from Tabasco signed with the club, the current Liga MX format with the Play-In didn't even exist yet. That's how long the road was.
It all began in the spring of 2014, when Tapia joined America's Under-13 squad. He arrived from Tabasco alongside a family well known in Mexican soccer: brothers Diego and Mauro Lainez, also from Tabasco, who became his teammates and allies during his first years adjusting to life in Mexico City. The three of them grew up together at the Nido, training, dreaming and competing for a spot on the first team.
The problem for a promising goalkeeper at America has always been the same: the depth chart at the top is stacked. Tapia climbed step by step through the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 ranks, showing steady form between the posts, but ahead of him came names like Agustin Marchesin, Guillermo Ochoa, Luis Angel Malagon and, more recently, Rodolfo Cota. Being the best in your generation doesn't count for much when the starter is untouchable.
The loan spells that shaped a goalkeeper
Once he'd aged out of Under-20 eligibility, the club's front office decided in Clausura 2023 to loan him out to Vendados de Merida in the Liga de Expansion, where he played 11 matches and left a good impression. That loan opened the door to another one: Queretaro. There, at 22 years old, he fulfilled his dream of making his top-flight debut in a match between Atletico San Luis and Queretaro, and he found a fair amount of regular playing time over a couple of seasons with the Gallos Blancos.
Then came another loan, this time to Tigres, where he ran into an obstacle similar to the one he'd left behind at America: Nahuel Guzman is practically immovable as the team's goalkeeper. Tapia went back to the bench, nearly out of action, for two more years, until he returned to Coapa.
By 2026, at 25 years old, he was no longer a young goalkeeper, nor one with much accumulated experience in the top flight. In his first six months back, still under Andre Jardine, he was relegated to third-choice goalkeeper, practically forgotten in the rotation.
The opportunity finally came down to circumstances on the calendar: an injury to Malagon and the workload Cota was carrying in the second half of the season led Guillermo Almada to hand Tapia the starting job in Matchday 4, in the match against Atletico San Luis played at Estadio Banorte. Twelve years after arriving at the club, Fernando Tapia made his debut for America.
My debut here, finally, where I grew up, where I was born, where I did everything. Exciting and I'm happy, especially with my whole family watching, an unforgettable moment.Fernando Tapia
Tapia's story doesn't have the immediate shine of a big-money signing or the impact of a decisive goal. It's more the story of someone who stayed, waited and didn't leave when the line ahead of him seemed endless.
