Fernando Zampedri Becomes Universidad Catolica's All-Time Leading Scorer with 170 Goals

Some numbers speak for themselves. 170 goals in 262 matches is one of them. With that tally, Fernando Zampedri stands, without question, as the greatest goalscorer in Universidad Catolica's history. And the best part for the Cruzados is that the forward, at 38 years old, has no plans to hang up his boots just yet.

The previous record belonged to Rodrigo Barrera, with 118 goals, a mark that had stood untouched since 2002. More than two decades holding firm against the passage of time, until an Entre Rios native arrived who never seems to tire of celebrating a goal.

That's the key to this story: Zampedri was never exactly a prodigy. Born in Chajari, Entre Rios, he spent a good chunk of his career bouncing around Argentina's lower divisions, far from the spotlight. It wasn't until the 2016/17 season that he finally broke into the top flight. Everything suggested his best years would come too late to leave a lasting mark. Universidad Catolica saw it differently.

A Six-Time Top Scorer Who Arrived Amid a Pandemic

His arrival at San Carlos de Apoquindo came ahead of the 2020 season, right in the middle of the pandemic, when Chilean soccer was being played under strict protocols, empty stadiums and total uncertainty. Far from being thrown off by the circumstances, Zampedri started scoring right away and never let up.

Since then he has been the league's top scorer six times over: 20 goals in 2020, 23 in 2021, 18 in 2022, 17 in 2023, 19 in 2024 and 16 in 2025. Six straight seasons as the club's top scorer, a run of consistency that was remarkable on its own. And in 2026, with 23 goals and the season still underway, he keeps piling them on at a pace he probably never imagined when he arrived in Chile at age 32.

What stands out is that none of those seasons was a one-off: that very consistency is what allowed him to blow past a record that once seemed untouchable. Barrera needed an entire career in Cruzados colors to reach his 118 goals; Zampedri has already passed him and keeps widening the gap with every match he plays.

He now tops the list of Universidad Catolica's all-time leading scorers, a ranking decades in the making that he rewrote in just six years. With his contract still active and minutes still on the field, the question that lingers is simple: how much further can that number climb? For now, there seems to be only one answer: even higher.
