Finland Demolishes San Marino 0-7 in Nations League Rout

Four minutes. That's all it took Joel Pohjanpalo to open the scoring at the Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle, and from there the match had no suspense left. Finland went on to rout San Marino 0-7 in Group C1 of the UEFA Nations League, on a night San Marino will want to forget as quickly as possible.

The script was written early. Pohjanpalo made it 1-0 in the 4th minute with a low shot from the middle of the box, and just nine minutes later Adrian Svanbäck doubled the lead with a header off a Leo Walta cross. San Marino, barely able to keep the ball, found no way to stem the flow of chances, and before the half-hour mark Benjamin Källman, set up once again by Svanbäck, made it 0-3 at the break.

The second-half collapse

If the first half was rough, the second finished the job. Barely a minute into the restart, Leo Walta unleashed a right-footed strike from outside the box that curled into the top corner for 0-4. A minute later, San Marino were down to ten men: Alessandro Golinucci was sent off with a straight red card, and the home side was completely overwhelmed. Walta struck again soon after, this time assisted by Juho Lähteenmäki, to complete his brace and make it 0-5 in the 54th minute.

The Finnish onslaught didn't stop there. Pohjanpalo completed a personal hat trick with the goal for 0-6 in the 78th minute, after a through ball from Svanbäck, and sealed the rout from the penalty spot in the 87th, after Marcello Mularoni fouled Robin Lod inside the area. The final 0-7 stood as a fitting reflection of a gap that was obvious from the first minute to the last.

The numbers, unambiguous

The match stats leave no room for interpretation: Finland completely dominated possession, tempo and chance creation.

The xG numbers, calculated from the shots taken in the match itself, tell the same story: Finland generated an estimated 3.48 expected goals against just 0.04 for San Marino, a gap that confirms what was plain to see on the field better than any other stat could.

What it means in the standings

In Group C1, Finland moved to 3 points with a goal difference of +7 after their opening match, while San Marino remained on zero points with a -7 goal difference. The gap between the two sides in the table is 3 points, though it's worth remembering this was just the first match for each team in the group, so the standings still say little about what's to come in the following matchdays.

What is clear is the scale of the beating: seven goals, down to ten men from the 50th minute on, and possession that barely touched 25 percent for the home side. Finland, with Pohjanpalo, Svanbäck and Walta sharing the goals and assists, had the match settled long before the final whistle.
