Flamengo tops Fluminense 1-0 on Carrascal strike to tighten grip on Brasileirao lead
Rossi was the standout with several key saves as Jardim's side moved to 64 points, one ahead of Palmeiras, ahead of a trip to face Estudiantes in the Libertadores.
The Maracana fell silent again just as Fluminense was starting to believe. With the match even and the clock ticking down, Carrascal popped up to tip the balance: Flamengo 1-0 Fluminense, this Sunday, in matchday 30 of the Brasileirao, in a Rio derby that Mengao managed to turn in its favor right when things were getting uncomfortable.
The first half had belonged entirely to the Rubro-Negro, at least on paper: 10 shots to 4 for the Tricolor. But Fabio's goal stayed intact despite the warning signs. Just minutes into the match, the Flu goalkeeper flew across his line to deny a dangerous shot from Samuel Lino, and at the 10 minute mark he also denied Paqueta, on a play where Pedro got a touch on the rebound but couldn't force it in.
Fluminense answered with a header from Castillo in the 25th minute, but Rossi was alert and came up with a strong save. Eleven minutes later it was Pedro who tested the keeper from close range, his shot sailing just wide of Fabio's post. Between chances there were also complaints from both sides: Fluminense appealed for a penalty after a collision between Lucho Acosta and Samuel Lino early on, and right before halftime they called for a red card on Pulgar for a foul on Castillo. The referee sided against them on both occasions, showing only a yellow card to the midfielder.
The second half and Carrascal's blow
With the pressure on to keep hold of first place as Palmeiras closed in, Flamengo came out in the second half looking to dictate the tempo. Instead, it was Fluminense that came closest to breaking the deadlock: in the 16th minute, Ganso played Martinelli through one on one with the keeper, and Martinelli placed his shot low and tight to the post, but Rossi was there again to keep it out.
It was right at that moment, just as the Tricolor was beginning to take over, that the blow landed. In the 19th minute of the second half, Paqueta whipped in a cross that Carrascal met first time to make it 1-0, a goal that would end up deciding the derby.
Fluminense refused to give in and pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing stretch, while Flamengo dropped back to protect the lead. In the 44th minute, a Hulk free kick found Ignacio's head, but the header went straight into Rossi's hands. Moments later, Serna pounced on a mistake by Leo Ortiz, but was once again denied by the Flamengo goalkeeper, who ended up being the standout player of the afternoon.
With this win, Leonardo Jardim's side moved to 64 points, one ahead of its closest pursuer, Palmeiras, and remains atop the Brasileirao. But there is no rest in sight: Flamengo now has to travel to Buenos Aires to face Estudiantes de La Plata next Thursday at 9:30 PM, in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2026 semifinals. After that comes a home game against Bahia in the league, before closing out the series against the Argentine side on Thursday the 21st at the Maracana, with a spot in the final on the line.
