Flick edges into the Cruyff and Guardiola conversation at Barcelona

From that 2-8 in Lisbon to today, the German coach built his own project with Lamine Yamal as its standard bearer, and he's starting to steer the team back toward its greatest historical versions.

Flick edges into the Cruyff and Guardiola conversation at Barcelona

There's an image that sums up what's happening at Barcelona better than any statistic: the team scores the first goal and, instead of easing up, it's already thinking about the second. That's not an accident. That's Hansi Flick.

The German is earning himself, game by game, a seat at a table that until now had room for only two names: Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola. They are the two towering figures of the Barça bench, the ones who defined an era and a way of understanding soccer. And while Real Madrid keeps stumbling since Ancelotti's departure, Barcelona has found in Flick someone who's starting to come up in that very same conversation.

The curious part is how he got there. It was a recommendation from Ralf Rangnick (now Austria's national team coach) to Joan Laporta that put Flick on Barcelona's radar. At first there were doubts, even a certain wariness. Today, that wariness has turned into pure admiration.

A coach who brings out the best in every player

Flick is the type who demands a lot, but he's also the type who builds a kind of trust in the locker room that goes beyond the professional. Just look at Raphinha, now one of the best forwards in the game today, as proof of what he can get out of a player once he finds the right button to press. He keeps his distance from the group, sure, but he also knows how to show a more paternal side to the younger players when a lack of minutes starts to weigh on them.

Cruyff, after becoming a legend as a player, revolutionized the club and Spanish soccer with the famous 'Dream Team,' a side capable of touching the sky one day and crashing back down to earth in ways that echoed around the world. Guardiola, for his part, didn't just transform Barcelona, he changed soccer worldwide. Positional play, high pressing, quick one-touch passing, endless possession. He started shaping all of that at the reserve level and took it to its fullest expression with an unrepeatable generation and a genius like Lionel Messi.

Flick doesn't have a Messi, but he has his own version of a generational talent in Lamine Yamal, surrounded by a group of young players, many of them products of La Masia, who already know what they want to achieve and how to get there. And that's the key point: if Guardiola put his own spin on what Cruyff built, Flick is showing that he can put his own spin on what Guardiola built.

All of this began in the worst way imaginable: that 2-8 loss in Lisbon to Flick's Bayern was a humiliation that will never be erased from Barça's history. And yet, over time, that wound became the starting point of a relationship that is now giving the club some of its best moments in recent memory. The style carries Guardiola's foundation (possession, pressing, verticality) but with a much more direct edge toward the opposing goal.

Hansi is happy in Barcelona. Just as beloved as he is respected, he walks around the city trying to go unnoticed, though the affection he gets everywhere gives him away. In fact, he's already made clear that this will be his final stop as a coach.

It would be an exaggeration to say he's already surpassed Guardiola. Pep is, and will always be, a legend of Barcelonismo. But it's also undeniable that this team is edging closer every day to that Barça we once called unmatchable. And what if Flick ends up lifting the Champions League trophy? Then, perhaps, the debate would get even more interesting.
