Flick Surpasses Cruyff: Barcelona's Manager Has Topped the Table in 60 of His First 80 Matchdays

The German coach has reached in 80 games what the Dutch legend needed 300 matches to accomplish.

Flick Surpasses Cruyff: Barcelona's Manager Has Topped the Table in 60 of His First 80 Matchdays

Some numbers just sit there as statistics, and others force you to take a second look at the club's history books. Barcelona's numbers under Hansi Flick belong to the second group. With the win at Mestalla against Valencia, the German coach put his team back on top of LaLiga, and in doing so, posted a mark that now separates him from legends who once sat in the Barcelona dugout.

Here's the figure: Flick has led the standings in 60 of the 80 matchdays he has been in charge of Barcelona. It might sound like a dry statistic, but it's worth comparing to what Johan Cruyff did, who spent 59 matchdays as league leader across his entire spell at the club. Flick has already gone past him.

The Big Difference: Time

That's where the real story lies. It took Cruyff 300 matches to put together those 59 weeks at the top of the table. Flick needed just 80 games to top that mark. It's not about one being better than the other. These are different eras, different opponents, a different game altogether. Still, the pace at which Flick is racking up time in first place is striking, to say the least.

And there's more. Counting those first 80 league matches, Flick is now the coach with the most wins in the club's recent history over that span: 63 victories. Behind him sit two names that carry plenty of weight: Luis Enrique, with 62, and Pep Guardiola, with 61. Two coaches who filled the trophy case at Camp Nou, and who now find themselves, for now, a notch below Flick in this particular comparison.

A Frightening Start to the Season

The other part of this story has to do with how this Barcelona side opened the campaign. With the win in Valencia, the team posted the third best start in LaLiga history: 4 wins in the first four matchdays and a goal difference of plus 15. That plus 15 matches Real Madrid's mark from the 1958-59 season and trails only Real Madrid's 1987-88 side, which reached plus 20 over the same stretch. To find anything like this in the club's modern era, you have to go back quite a ways.

Next up is Levante, and there's another benchmark within reach: if Barça makes it five straight wins while keeping a strong goal difference, they would draw level with the 2017-18 Barcelona side, which opened with five wins and a plus 15 goal difference. Above that, only two historic starts by Real Madrid remain out of reach: the 1987-88 side (5 wins, plus 22) and the 1958-59 side (5 wins, plus 16). Lofty numbers, sure, but they're right there, waiting to see if this Barça side is willing to close the gap a little more.
