Four Central Americans set to face Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester City in the 2026-27 Champions League

Four Central American players are going to hear the Champions League anthem from out on the field, not from a couch at home. And it won't be just any matchup: the list of opponents includes Real Madrid, Liverpool, PSG, Manchester City, Inter and Borussia Dortmund. To understand what's coming in the 2026-27 season, you have to start with the opening itself: the first match of the league phase will be, of all things, a Central American derby.

On September 8, AEK Athens, home to Honduran midfielder Kervin Arriaga, will host LASK, home to Panamanian defender Andrés Andrade. A day later, two more Panamanians, César Blackman and Cristian Martínez, will make their debuts in far less friendly circumstances: Slovan Bratislava travels to face PSG at Parc des Princes. Right there, without warning, the whole season awaiting the region is already summed up: first against each other, then against the giants.

A schedule worth circling in red

Arriaga probably has the flashiest fixture list of the four. After the opening clash with Andrade, he'll travel to face Manchester City on October 20, host Real Madrid on November 4, and close out his league phase on the road against Borussia Dortmund on January 27. Three names that any Honduran player would have only seen on television until now.

Andrade's slate isn't far behind. LASK will host Liverpool on October 14 and, further down the calendar, there's the date that jumps out the moment the schedule is released: a trip to face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on January 19. Blackman and Martínez, after their debut against PSG, will take on Roma and Betis before closing their league phase at home to Inter Milan.

There's also another date that will stir up more than just regional curiosity: on November 3, LASK will host Slovan Bratislava, putting three Panamanians face to face on the same Champions League pitch. Panama, in fact, will supply three of the four Central American representatives in the tournament; Honduras, with Arriaga, is the other country in the mix.

Costa Rica, a notch lower but with more names

Interestingly, Costa Rica will be the Central American country with the biggest overall presence across UEFA competitions this season, even though none of its players will feature in the Champions League. Josimar Alcócer will play in the Europa League with Sparta Prague, a tournament that will also include Honduran winger Luis Palma (Lech Poznań) and Panamanian fullback Michael Amir Murillo (Beşiktaş). The largest concentration of Costa Ricans will show up in the Conference League, with Carlos Mora, Jurguens Montenegro, Kenay Myrie, Anthony Contreras and Orlando Galo among those who qualified.

In total, 15 Central American players belong to clubs that qualified across the three European competitions. But only four will get the privilege of standing toe to toe, in the continent's top club competition, with the likes of Real Madrid or Manchester City. That, in the end, is the season awaiting the region.
