Francisco Calvo heads home the winner as Nacional beats Peñarol in the derby

A header, a wild celebration and a date now etched into Francisco Calvo's calendar. The Costa Rican defender showed up at just the right moment to give Nacional a 1-0 win over Peñarol at the Campeón del Siglo, in the fourth round of the Torneo Clausura, and walked off the field as the name of the night.

The goal came from a contested ball that Maximiliano Boggio refused to let go of, and that's where Calvo stepped in to finish it off. It was enough to keep the scoreboard from moving again and to hand the Tricolor three crucial points in the derby. But beyond the result, there's something Calvo himself pointed out right after the final whistle: for him, that goal carries weight that goes well beyond three points.

"I scored a really nice goal that's going to go down in history. The credit belongs to Boggio, who went and fought for that first ball," the defender said, sharing the credit with his teammate before talking about his own moment.

A Costa Rican writing his own history in the derby

Calvo arrived at Nacional at the express request of Jorge Bava, and since then he's been logging minutes until earning his spot in the back line. Playing a derby against Peñarol was already a personal milestone in itself: he became the first Costa Rican footballer to play in a Nacional-Peñarol match wearing the tricolor jersey. And he didn't stop there, because on top of that he was the author of the goal that decided the game.

"I don't have many words, but I'm very happy. This group deserves it and the fans deserve it, because despite the moment we're going through, they never stopped supporting us," he said, making clear that the win felt like something shared with the fans who packed the stadium.

The defender didn't hold back his ambitions for what's next. With the derby already part of his history, he's aiming for something bigger. "I already became the first Costa Rican to play a derby for Nacional, now I want to become champion," he said, setting the course for what's ahead.

Before the match there was a big flag display from the fans that, according to Calvo, could be felt inside the locker room. "On behalf of the whole group we want to thank the fans. The flag display was incredible and the support they give us despite the moment we're in is impressive," he said, referring to the backing the squad received in the days leading up to the derby.

To close, the center back had a special word for the coach who brought him to the club.

"I want to thank Jorge Bava for bringing me to this great club. He asked for me and thanks to Jorge I'm here. I never hesitated to come and I'm very happy here," he concluded.Francisco Calvo

With this win, Nacional adds another favorable chapter to the recent history of derbies against Peñarol, and does so with an unexpected protagonist: a Central American defender who arrived not long ago and already has his name stamped on a victory that the tricolor faithful won't forget anytime soon.
