Gabriel Jesus Joins Barcelona From Arsenal for $10 Million After Julian Alvarez Deal Collapses

The Brazilian signed a three-year deal and became the only true center forward on Hansi Flick's roster after Atletico Madrid refused to loan out the Argentine.

Ten million euros and a plot twist in the final week of the transfer window. That's how quickly Barcelona wrapped up the signing of Gabriel Jesus, who arrived from Arsenal when almost nobody had him on their radar. The Brazilian signed for three seasons and, in one stroke, became the only true center forward on Hansi Flick's roster.

The move caught even the head coach off guard. Flick wasn't expecting such an affordable option to land on the table, especially with Barca still working through the departures of Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres and Marcus Rashford. The truth is Jesus wasn't plan A. He wasn't even plan A.1. The real target was Julian Alvarez, and that's where this story gets interesting.

Atletico Madrid slammed the door shut. The club's CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, was blunt a week ago, saying they would "never" sell Alvarez to Barca, a club he accused of approaching the player improperly. With that path dead, Deco activated what's known inside the club as "Plan B": someone more affordable who could fill the hole left by Lewandowski and Torres without needing to be a guaranteed starter. There were talks with Club Brugge over Nicolo Tresoldi, but once the asking price hit 50 million, interest shifted to Jesus within days.

A longtime target, activated at just the right moment

The interesting part is that Jesus isn't a new name for Barca. They had scouted him since his days at Palmeiras, before he signed with Manchester City in 2016. That long-running interest, though, has little to do with how this summer played out: club sources had already indicated earlier in the year that, facing the risk of losing both Lewandowski and Torres, they were considering signing up to two forwards, one of them with a profile similar to the Brazilian's.

Jesus himself acknowledged how fast everything came together, and he accepted a pay cut to help make the transfer happen.

Everything happened very fast. Just a week ago I got a message saying this could happenGabriel Jesus

Asked about arriving as the second choice behind Alvarez, he didn't seem bothered:

It doesn't bother me to be 'Plan B,' it doesn't make me uncomfortable. I have the chance to play for Barcelona, an opportunity I had ten years ago that life has given me again nowGabriel Jesus

Why he fits Flick's style

The high-press, high-line football Flick demands requires forwards who never stop running. And that's where Jesus has a track record that backs up the bet. Pep Guardiola, who coached him at City, called him "the best in the world" in 2022 when it comes to running and pressing high up the pitch. Mikel Arteta, who signed him for Arsenal that same year, made the same point: without that kind of intensity from forwards, he said, "you can't force mistakes or play in the opponent's half as much as possible."

The numbers back up the talk. Across his four seasons at Arsenal, Jesus averaged 3.64 ball recoveries per 90 minutes; last season, once recovered from his ACL injury, that figure rose to 4.06. Alvarez, for comparison, averages 2.57 since joining Atletico. And the forwards Barca had last season fell well short of that level: Lewandowski recovered 1.68 balls per game and Torres 1.64, trailing even Lamine Yamal (3.93) and Raphinha (3.05).

In terms of offensive output, the gap with Alvarez isn't huge either: Jesus averages 0.63 goals or assists per 90 minutes in the Premier League (21 goals and 11 assists in 84 games), compared to Alvarez's 0.67 at Atletico. Flick was clear after the 5-2 rout of Rayo Vallecano on Monday:

I was a bit surprised that we had the chance to sign him. I love him, I like his style of play. It fits our philosophy. I think he can help us a lotHansi Flick

Is the Alvarez saga over?

No, according to club sources consulted by ESPN, who said "there will be more transfer windows" and that the Argentine remains a genuine target. Alvarez, 26, made clear in June that he wanted to leave Atletico, even turning down an offer from Arsenal while waiting on Barca, and missed training sessions last week. But Atletico, irritated by the approach, dug in: the player is under contract through 2030 and the Rojiblancos hold all the leverage.

Still, if Jesus delivers and Raphinha, who already has five goals in three games playing as an improvised striker, keeps up that form, the urgency to pay up to 150 million euros for a proven number nine might cool off a bit. Jesus now has a chance to make up lost ground, including a recall to the Brazilian national team, while Barca continues searching, in the medium term, for someone who can truly replace the 120 goals Lewandowski delivered over four years.
