Gallegol, Deportivo Cali idol and club's all-time leading scorer with 168 goals, dies
The forward, who won four league titles with the Azucareros between 1965 and 1970, has died at 86, leaving behind a record no other attacker has managed to beat.
Some numbers don't need embellishment. 168 goals in 300 matches is one of those numbers. That's the tally left behind by Jorge Ramirez Gallego, the eternal "Gallegol," on the fields of Deportivo Cali, a mark that remains intact as the club's all-time record decades after he hung up his boots. Colombian soccer now bids farewell to that idol, who has died at 86.
It's hard to explain to anyone who didn't live through that era what Gallegol meant to Cali's fans. He was the man they asked for a goal the way you'd ask someone for the time, and he almost always delivered. Wearing that green and white jersey, he won four league titles: in 1965, 1967, 1969 and 1970, a run that made Cali a regular contender in those years and turned him into one of the symbols of that golden era.
The interesting thing is that before establishing himself as a legend in Valle del Cauca, Gallegol had already made a name for himself at Millonarios, where he also lifted trophies: he was champion in 1963 and 1964. Moving from one giant club to another and winning a title at both isn't something that happens to just any forward, especially not in an era when Colombian soccer already demanded a high level to stand out. His career also included stints at Deportes Quindio and Deportes Tolima, clubs where he also left his mark before time turned him into a mandatory reference point whenever the conversation turns to the best attackers the country has produced.
A name that still stands
What makes Gallegol's record special isn't just the number of goals, but that it has withstood entire generations of forwards who passed through Cali hoping to surpass it. None of them managed it. There he remains, atop the club's all-time scoring chart, a reminder of an era when goals in Cali had a name of their own.
Deportivo Cali bid farewell to its idol by highlighting exactly that indelible legacy, that of a player who embodied a way of understanding the club's soccer during its most glorious years in Colombian professional football. His name remains forever linked to those four stars from the sixties and seventies, and to a scoring record that, for now, no one has been able to match.
