Gimnasia La Plata edges Tigre 2-1 with two converted penalties, holds third in Group B

Auzmendi converted two penalties as the home side won 2-1 on an afternoon when he also missed a spot kick in the first half.

Gimnasia La Plata edges Tigre 2-1 with two converted penalties, holds third in Group B

The second half hadn't even reached a minute when Gimnasia La Plata was already celebrating. Right after the restart, in the 46th minute, Germán Conti rose for a header to make it 1-0 off a cross from Ignacio Fernández that came from a free kick. Tigre needed just three minutes to answer: Ignacio Russo, also from close range and also off a free kick into the box, made it 1-1 in the 49th. The match, which looked headed for a draw, was settled later by a penalty that Agustín Auzmendi converted in the 66th minute for the final 2-1 at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo.

The result gives Gimnasia La Plata the win in a matchup in Argentina's Primera División, within Group B, where both sides arrived with different needs but separated by just 3 points in the standings.

A first half of missed penalties and posts

The home side didn't have to wait long for its first clear chance: in the 11th minute a penalty was awarded for a foul on Auzmendi, but Ignacio Fernández wasted it three minutes later with a shot that went just wide. The match stayed open from there: Tigre answered with a header from Nahuel Banegas that flew high, and then with a shot from Jabes Saralegui that hit the left post in the 31st minute. Gimnasia, for its part, kept pushing with several chances from Ignacio Fernández and Maximiliano Zalazar that failed to find the target. The scoreless deadlock held until stoppage time, when the first blow landed.

The second half: a goal, an equalizer and another penalty

Barely into the second half, the match completely opened up. Conti's early goal was followed almost immediately by Russo's response, which leveled things again. The match stayed intense, with yellow cards shown to several players on both sides, until in the 62nd minute a new penalty was awarded to Gimnasia, this time for a foul on Lucas Janson inside the area. Auzmendi made no mistake this time, making it 2-1, a scoreline that would hold despite later attempts by Tigre through Ian Subiabre and Mauro Méndez, who couldn't seriously threaten the home goal.

The match by the numbers

The stats reflect a match that was even in possession but more effective for Gimnasia La Plata in the final third.

According to our xG estimate calculated from the match's shots, Gimnasia La Plata generated 2.86 expected goals compared to 1.22 for Tigre, a gap that reflects the higher volume of shots on target and corners produced by the home side, largely thanks to the penalty situations it earned at both ends.

Our preview published before the match projected a much tighter picture: 32% probability for Gimnasia La Plata, 35% for a draw and 33% for Tigre, with expected goals of 0.95 for the home side and 0.96 for the visitors. The match ultimately tilted in the home side's favor thanks to its effectiveness from the penalty spot, something no pre-match projection can anticipate with precision.

What the result means

Gimnasia La Plata adds a win that keeps it in third place in Group B, with 15 points from 8 matches played, just one point behind Sarmiento and one behind Argentinos Juniors, which leads with 16. Tigre, meanwhile, stays in fifth place with 12 points, the same total as Belgrano, in a group that remains tightly packed in the upper-middle of the table. Two converted penalties, one missed, and a match that broke open in just three minutes of the second half: that was, in essence, the story of the afternoon at El Bosque.
