Gimnasia Mendoza Snatches 2-2 Draw Against Boca Juniors in the 92nd Minute

Esteban Fernandez scored the equalizer in added time to rescue a point that had seemed lost for the home side.

Gimnasia Mendoza Snatches 2-2 Draw Against Boca Juniors in the 92nd Minute

When referee Dario Herrera blew the final whistle, fans were still celebrating inside Estadio Victor Antonio Legrotaglie as if it had been a win. Gimnasia Mendoza salvaged a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors in the 92nd minute, with a goal from Esteban Fernandez, after trailing for a good part of the match. Boca walked away with the feeling that it had let slip a lead it had managed well until the very end.

The match opened with a script nobody quite expected. Just 16 minutes in, Alan Velasco curled a right-footed finish into the top corner from outside the box after a counterattack set up by Tomas Belmonte. But Gimnasia Mendoza answered right away: two minutes later, Ignacio Sabatini tapped in a cross from Fermin Antonini with his right foot to make it 1-1. Playing at home and with the initiative, the hosts looked ready to make their turf count.

Boca struck again before the break. In the 37th minute, Kevin Zenon finished from close range with his left foot off an assist from Dylan Gorosito, sending the visitors into halftime up 1-2. Just before the first half ended, Alan Velasco also rattled the post on a clear chance that could have put the game away.

The second half brought fewer twists on the scoreboard but no shortage of tension. In the 70th minute, VAR chalked off a goal from Ignacio Sabatini for an offside in the buildup, a review that stopped Gimnasia Mendoza's momentum cold right when it was needed most. Boca, having brought on Carlos Palacios, Lautaro Blanco, Lautaro Di Lollo and Williams Alarcon, tried to see out the rest of the match without much trouble.

But the home side refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, with the fourth official having signaled six additional minutes, the reward finally came: in the 92nd minute, Esteban Fernandez slotted the ball low past the goalkeeper and just inside the post for the final 2-2, a goal that let Gimnasia Mendoza rescue a point that had seemed out of reach.

The numbers behind the draw

Gimnasia Mendoza was the busier side in terms of overall play, dominating possession and generating more shots, though Boca was hardly lacking in accuracy.

Based on our after-the-fact xG calculation, the match was extremely close in terms of chances created: 1.676 for Gimnasia Mendoza against 1.849 for Boca Juniors, a razor thin gap that reflects just how tight the game really was.

The result also stood in contrast to our pre-match projections, which had given Boca Juniors a 51 percent chance of winning, compared with just 18 percent for Gimnasia Mendoza and 31 percent for a draw. The expected goals figures we had going in, 0.71 for the home side and 1.35 for the visitors, for a combined 2.07, fell well short of the four goals the match ultimately produced.

What the result means in the standings

In Group A, Gimnasia Mendoza came into this match on top with 16 points from 8 games (5 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses), while Boca Juniors sat in sixth place with 11 points from 8 games (2 wins, 5 draws, 1 loss). The gap between the two sides was 5 points before kickoff, and the draw leaves Boca with yet another tie that confirms a pattern: a team picking up points one at a time but unable to break away in the standings.

For Gimnasia Mendoza, the stoppage time equalizer carries the flavor of a moral victory. Coming back in a match it trailed for almost the entire second half, with a disallowed goal along the way, speaks to a team that never stopped fighting. For Boca, meanwhile, what remains are two squandered leads and the sense that the result could have been very different.
