Gimnasia Mendoza and Deportivo Riestra Play to Scoreless Draw in VAR-Filled Clash

The home side dominated but couldn't find the net, while VAR overturned a red card, then confirmed it, and wiped out a visiting team's stoppage-time goal.

Gimnasia Mendoza and Deportivo Riestra Play to Scoreless Draw in VAR-Filled Clash

The match had everything except goals. Gimnasia Mendoza and Deportivo Riestra finished 0-0 at Estadio Víctor Antonio Legrotaglie in an Argentine Primera División clash that produced more drama in the rulebook than on the scoreboard: a red card wiped out by VAR that ended up being shown again moments later, and a stoppage-time goal from Deportivo Riestra that never made it onto the board after a video review.

The home team controlled possession from start to finish and created the better chances, but ran into the visiting goalkeeper's resistance time and again. In the first half, Ulises Sanchez and Luciano Cingolani both tested him without success, while Deportivo Riestra sat back and looked to counter, with efforts from Agustin Graneros and Mariano Bracamonte failing to trouble the target.

The VAR episode and the red card

The strangest stretch of the game came after the hour mark. In the 66th minute, Ignacio Sabatini was shown a red card for a foul on Facundo Miño, but a minute later, in the 67th, VAR stepped in and overturned the decision. The calm lasted barely a minute: in the 68th, Sabatini was sent off anyway, leaving Gimnasia Mendoza to play the rest of the match with ten men.

Down a man, the home side still created danger down the flanks after Blas Armoa and Tomas Ortiz came on, and had even struck the post through Matias Vargas before the red card. Deportivo Riestra, for its part, grew into the game over the final quarter of an hour and had its clearest chance in stoppage time: in the 94th minute, Antony Alonso celebrated what he thought was a goal, only for VAR to disallow it two minutes later, in the final play of a match that ended without goals.

The numbers behind a dominance that fell short

Gimnasia Mendoza was clearly on top in terms of ball control and attacking volume, though that edge never translated into scoring efficiency in front of goal.

The expected goals numbers calculated after the fact based on the match's shots tell the same story: Gimnasia Mendoza generated an estimated 1.34 expected goals compared to 0.469 for Deportivo Riestra. The gap points to a team that created more and better chances but simply couldn't convert them.

The final result strayed quite a bit from the pre-match forecast, which had given the home side a 37% chance of winning, a 38% chance of a draw, and a 25% chance of a visiting win, with a combined expected goals total of 1.66. The draw did end up being the most likely outcome under that model, though a scoreless 0-0 wasn't exactly the version of it anyone expected.

What it means in the standings

In Group A's standings, Gimnasia Mendoza came into the match in third place with 17 points from 10 games played (5 wins, 2 draws, and 3 losses), while Deportivo Riestra sat in 12th place with 10 points from the same number of matches (2 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses). The gap between the two sides stood at 7 points heading into the game, and the draw doesn't change much: it adds little for the team that needed the win most, while leaving the visitors with another point that still doesn't lift them out of the lower half of the table.

In the end, the match came down to two VAR decisions and a post: Gimnasia Mendoza dominated, created chances, and couldn't finish; Deportivo Riestra weathered the storm, got its clearest look at the perfect moment, and saw it taken away. A 0-0 with far more noise than the scoreline suggests.
