Gimnasia Mendoza thrashes Talleres de Córdoba 3-1 behind Módica brace in Argentina's Primera División

Gimnasia Mendoza thrashed Talleres de Córdoba 3-1 at Estadio Víctor Antonio Legrotaglie in Group A of Argentina's Primera División, in a match that was effectively settled in the first half thanks to a brace from Agustín Módica. The home side controlled the game from the start, built a cushion and held off a late visitor comeback bid to secure all three points.

A dominant first half

The match blew open early. In just the 6th minute, Augusto Schott brought down Luciano Cingolani inside the box for a penalty, and two minutes later Agustín Módica made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-0. Gimnasia Mendoza didn't ease up, and in the 19th minute doubled its lead: Módica himself, set up by Tomás O'Connor, finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0, a scoreline that already made clear who was in control at Mendoza.

Just after the restart, in the 50th minute, Luciano Cingolani, assisted by Módica, scored the third with a crossed shot to make it 3-0 and all but put the game away. Things boiled over in the 66th minute, when Juan Franco of Gimnasia Mendoza and Román Riquelme of Talleres de Córdoba were both sent off following a scuffle, leaving both teams to finish the match with ten men.

Talleres de Córdoba tried to fight back and had a clear chance to close the gap when the referee called a second penalty of the match, this time in favor of Gimnasia Mendoza for a foul by Timoteo Chamorro on Módica in the 80th minute, but Facundo Lencioni squandered the chance in the 82nd minute, his shot deflected by the goalkeeper. Four minutes later, Santiago Fernández pulled one back for the visitors with a precise strike from the center of the box to make it 3-1, a scoreline that held despite the added time.

The numbers behind the home team's control

The stats confirm that Gimnasia Mendoza was more clinical despite not leading in possession or total passes:

StatGimnasia MendozaTalleres de Córdoba
Possession (%)46.953.1
Shots1814
Shots on target75
Big chances12
Corners73
Passes443499
Fouls committed148

The home team generated more shots and more corners, and that pressure translated into an estimated 2.434 expected goals (xG, calculated after the fact based on shot location), compared to 1.334 for Talleres de Córdoba. These figures support the idea that, beyond the visitors' edge in possession, Gimnasia Mendoza was the team that created the clearer scoring chances.

What the preview said and what actually happened

The projection published before the match gave Gimnasia Mendoza a 34% chance of winning, a 35% chance of a draw and 31% for Talleres de Córdoba, with total expected goals of just 1.94. Reality ended up far exceeding that forecast: four goals were scored in total and the home side won convincingly, well beyond the tight contest those numbers had anticipated.

What the result means in the standings

In Group A, Gimnasia Mendoza came into this match with nine points from five games played (three wins and two losses), while Talleres de Córdoba had managed just three points in the same number of matches, with one win and four losses. The six-point gap between the two sides already hinted at the disparity that would ultimately show up on the field, and this rout only deepens the contrast between a Gimnasia Mendoza side fighting for the upper half of the group and a Talleres de Córdoba team that needs to turn things around in the coming fixtures.
