Gimnasia de Mendoza hosts a hot Boca amid Arruabarrena's Sudamericana focus

The Lobo arrives on a three-game winning streak while the Xeneize keeps one eye on Sao Paulo the following Tuesday.

Some matches sell themselves, and this is one of them. Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza hosts Boca on Saturday, September 5 at Estadio Victor Antonio Legrotaglie, with an extra wrinkle: the "Lobo" comes in rolling in the 2026 Torneo Clausura, while the "Xeneize" already has half an eye on the Bombonera, where days later a big chunk of its season is on the line against Sao Paulo in the Sudamericana.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 PM (Argentina and Uruguay), 3:30 PM in Chile and 2:30 PM in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, with live coverage on ESPN Premium for Argentine audiences.

A Gimnasia side that just keeps winning

What Gimnasia de Mendoza is doing is no accident. Dario Franco's team arrives on three straight wins and four victories in its last five outings, following a resounding 3-0 road win over Independiente. The club is trading blows in Group A and, in what is already starting to feel like a historic run for the institution, sits just two wins away from putting itself squarely in the mix for a spot in international competition.

To keep tabs on the Mendoza side, it's worth watching Agustin Modica, Facundo Lencioni, Luciano Cingolani and Tomas O'Connor, names that have been carrying the team's collective level through this stretch of the season.

Boca, torn between the Clausura and the Sudamericana

On the other side is a Boca team that hasn't lost in six matches in the Clausura, with two wins and four draws in that span, a run it kept alive by beating Lanus 1-0 at home. Rodolfo Arruabarrena's side also just punched its ticket to the Copa Argentina quarterfinals, eliminating Velez on penalties in the round of 16.

But the squad's energy is already starting to drift elsewhere: the Tuesday after this clash with Gimnasia, Boca hosts Sao Paulo at the Bombonera in the first leg of the Sudamericana quarterfinals. That explains why Arruabarrena is considering rotating some pieces to protect key players. Names to watch for the Xeneize include Santiago Ascacibar, Leonel Flores, Miguel Merentiel and Lautaro Blanco.

The two sides' most recent meeting came on February 28 of this year, when they drew 1-1 at the Bombonera, with Merentiel scoring for the blue and gold and Luciano Paredes netting for the Mendoza side.

Can Gimnasia pull off the upset right when Boca's mind is on Sao Paulo? The Lobo's surge in confidence and the rotations expected from the Xeneize make for an even match, with Mendoza needing points to keep dreaming and Boca needing to save legs without losing its unbeaten streak.
