Guadalajara Dominated, Querétaro Delivered the Blow: 0-2 at the Akron Despite Tripling Possession

With goals from Alí Ávila and Mateo Coronel, Querétaro beat a Guadalajara side that had 74% possession and finished with ten men after Govea's red card, 2-0.

Guadalajara Dominated, Querétaro Delivered the Blow: 0-2 at the Akron Despite Tripling Possession

Guadalajara kept the ball for 90 minutes, finishing with almost three times as much possession as its opponent, but it was Querétaro that walked away from Estadio Akron with all three points after a resounding 0-2. Alí Ávila opened the scoring in just the 11th minute, and Mateo Coronel sealed it with a lethal counterattack in the 67th. To make matters worse, Guadalajara finished the match with ten men after Omar Govea was sent off in stoppage time.

The final result leaves a curious picture: the team that controlled the ball, that fired 26 shots to its rival's 13, and that racked up more than 74% possession, walked away from home with nothing. Querétaro, with less than a quarter of the possession, made the most of its chances in a way the home side could not.

An Early Blow and a Counterattack That Sealed It

The match was just 11 minutes old when Enzo Giménez set up Alí Ávila, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 0-1. Guadalajara responded with persistence: Brian Gutiérrez, Hugo Camberos, Luis Romo and Kevin Castañeda all tried their luck from inside and outside the box in the first half without finding the net, and the score stood at the narrow visitor's lead heading into the break.

In the second half, Guadalajara kept pushing forward (Ricardo Marín, Santiago Sandoval and Castañeda himself had their chances), but in the 67th minute came the blow that ended any hopes of a comeback: after a counterattack, Enzo Giménez once again provided the assist, this time to Mateo Coronel, who finished with his left foot into the center of the goal to make it 0-2. Guadalajara kept trying with substitutions Ángel Sepúlveda, Efraín Álvarez, Jordán Carrillo and Luis Gabriel Rey, including a Sepúlveda shot that grazed the crossbar in the 79th minute, but the home side could not pull one back. In the 89th minute, Omar Govea was shown a straight red card for a foul, leaving the home team down a man to close out the match.

The Numbers Behind the Sterile Dominance

The stats confirm the storyline of a match in which volume never translated into goals for the home side:

The most striking detail is that despite doubling Querétaro in shots and tripling it in corners, Guadalajara barely edged Querétaro in shots on target, 5 to 6. According to our post-match xG estimate based on shot location, Querétaro generated 1.824 expected goals to Guadalajara's 1.202, a figure that backs up what the scoreboard ultimately showed: fewer chances, but clearer ones, on the visiting side.

What the Preview Said

Before kickoff, our projection gave Guadalajara a 58% chance of winning, against just 15% for Querétaro and 27% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.71 for the home side against 0.77 for the visitors. The result ended up being the exact opposite of what we projected: the team with the lower odds of winning walked away with a clear victory.

What It Means in the Standings

Guadalajara stays in second place with 18 points, while Querétaro climbs to 17, just 1 point behind the home side in the standings. With this result, Querétaro throws itself squarely into the fight for the top of Liga MX, while Guadalajara will have to digest a home defeat that, given the numbers from the match, felt more unjust than deserved.
