Guadalajara Thrashes Tijuana 5-2 in a Nightmare Night for the Visitors

Five goals in 46 minutes. That's how dominant Guadalajara was at Estadio Akron, where the home side ended up thrashing Club Tijuana 5-2 in a match that, on paper, looked like it would go very differently. The result was essentially decided before halftime: by the 68th minute the scoreboard already read 5-0, and Tijuana's two late goals only served to dress up a nightmare night for the visitors.

Guadalajara struck first through the air and kept striking that way. In the 22nd minute, Santiago Sandoval headed home a corner kick delivery from Luis Romo to open the scoring. Eight minutes later, in the 30th, Ricardo Marin repeated the formula: another corner, another header, this time set up by Diego Campillo, making it 2-0. The second half opened the same way the first had ended, with Guadalajara pressing forward. In first-half stoppage time, Ramiro Arciga brought down Hugo Camberos for a penalty, and just after the restart, in the 46th minute, Marin converted it to make it 3-0.

Tijuana had no answers, and Guadalajara kept pouring it on. Roberto Alvarado scored the fourth in the 58th minute with a shot from the middle of the box set up by Brian Gutierrez, and ten minutes later, in the 68th, Diego Campillo made it 5-0 with a low shot assisted by Alvarado himself. It was the high point of the afternoon for the home side, and by then the match was effectively decided.

Only then did Tijuana respond, though far too late to change the story. Elias Manoel, who had come on at halftime, scored twice with his head: first in the 74th minute, heading into the top corner off a cross from Francisco Gonzalez, and then deep into stoppage time, in the 91st, to make it a final 5-2 with an assist from Adonis Preciado. Two goals from the same player added a bit of respectability to the scoreline, but they weren't enough to move the needle on a result that had long been settled.

What the Numbers Say

The stats confirm the home side's dominance, though not as overwhelmingly as the scoreline suggests. Guadalajara controlled more possession and was more clinical, while Tijuana generated plenty of shot volume without the same efficiency.

The xG calculated after the fact based on shot location comes out to 2.544 for Guadalajara and 2.074 for Tijuana, figures that point to a match closer in chance creation than the final score suggests. The difference came down to finishing: Guadalajara converted five of its eight shots on target, an extremely high conversion rate that explains why the scoreline ended up so lopsided despite Tijuana having more total shots and more big chances.

The contrast with the pre-match projections is enormous. Our preview gave Guadalajara just a 19% chance of winning, against 46% for Tijuana and 35% for a draw, with an expected total of just 1.76 goals (0.63 for the home side and 1.13 for the visitors). Reality turned out to be exactly the opposite of what was projected: not only did the team with the lower odds win, it won by a three-goal margin and single-handedly exceeded the total goals expected for the entire match.

What It Means in the Standings

With this result, Guadalajara moves to 10 points from five matches played, with a record of three wins, one draw and one loss, and sits in fourth place in Liga MX. Tijuana, which also carries a record of three wins, one draw and one loss, stays level on 10 points but drops to sixth, with no difference in points versus Guadalajara but with a goal difference now considerably worse after this blowout. A night to forget in Tijuana, and one that Guadalajara will surely remember as one of the best of its season so far.
