Gustavo Quinteros out at Independiente after 4-0 rout by Atletico Tucuman in Copa Argentina
The Argentine coach, who had a contract through December 2026, leaves the club eleven months after arriving.

Four goals allowed and an elimination that stung more than it should have. That was the last thing Gustavo Quinteros saw as head coach of Independiente. Hours after the 4-0 rout by Atletico Tucuman in the round of 16 of the Copa Argentina, the Avellaneda club decided to make a clean break and end his tenure, just eleven months after he had arrived.
The news was confirmed by journalist Nicolas Brusco: Independiente's board voted unanimously to terminate the coach's contract, which had run through December 2026. In other words, he still had several months left on his deal, but patience ran out ahead of schedule.
Quinteros, an Argentine who became a naturalized Bolivian citizen, leaves the club with a record of 14 wins, 8 draws and 10 losses. Along the way went any hope of competing for the 2026 Apertura title, a competition in which Independiente reached the round of 16 before being eliminated by Rosario Central. Add in the cup humiliation against Atletico Tucuman and the picture becomes clear: three straight losses and a Copa Argentina exit that landed like a bucket of cold water in Avellaneda.
So who takes charge of the squad while things get sorted out? Hugo Tocalli will run this afternoon's training session, and starting Friday, after the reserve team's match in Santiago del Estero, Carlos Matheu and Eduardo Tuzzio will take interim charge of the first team.
The club decided not to hold a press conference to explain the departure. Club officials, busy working out the contractual details of the split, said they would only speak once a name is confirmed for the bench. That same public appearance is expected to also include an announcement of the date for the assembly where the timeline for the upcoming elections will be set.
The words that hinted at the storm to come
What stands out is that just a day before his exit, Quinteros had been asked about his future and made clear he had no intention of stepping aside on his own.
As a coach I always honor my contracts. I take responsibility for everything that falls on me, and it never crosses my mind, whether I go out first or last, to leave early. On the contrary, this gives me even more strength and energy to work and try to get the best out of every player.Gustavo Quinteros
But in that same press conference, the former Velez and Ecuador national team coach offered another line that ended up being far more revealing of the internal tension building at the club.
We have basically the same squad, and 15 or 16 players have left. It's hard to turn a situation around or have a real shot at fighting higher up the table when so many players leave and very few, or none, come in. I take full responsibility for my part, but the players and the coaching staff aren't entirely to blame for years of continued failure at a club like Independiente.Gustavo Quinteros
That back and forth over responsibility, combined with the blow on the field, ended up convincing the board. In fact, it emerged that club officials had already reached out to Quinteros even before the match in Rosario, hinting that they expected some kind of gesture from him if the team fell to Rosario Central. That gesture never came, and the decision ultimately fell to the board itself.
There is still no confirmed successor, though a few names are already circulating, among them Omar De Felippe, who the club had already been in contact with even before the Copa Argentina match. In the meantime, Independiente will have to cover the payout for the five months remaining on Quinteros's contract, one more cost from a tenure that ended sooner than expected.
