Haaland's header sinks Coventry as Manchester City makes it three wins from three

Erling Haaland's 25th-minute goal was enough for the Citizens to reach 9 points from three games, in a match they controlled overwhelmingly at the Etihad.

Haaland's header sinks Coventry as Manchester City makes it three wins from three

A header from Erling Haaland in the 25th minute was all Manchester City needed to take three points off Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium: 1-0 and another clean sweep for the home side. The scoreline, though, only tells half the story of a match City controlled from start to finish without ever turning that dominance into a rout.

The possession numbers say it all: 77.6% for City against a modest 22.4% for Coventry. With 803 passes to 217, the home side had the ball almost entirely at their command, though not always with the cutting edge that gap suggests. Coventry, with little of the ball, sat deep and occasionally caused problems on the counter, but ended up committing 17 fouls to City's 7, a sign of the toll taken by chasing the game.

How the match was decided

Coventry started with more courage than expected. In the 7th minute, Taiwo Awoniyi tried his luck from outside the box and the ball drifted just wide, and shortly after Bobby Thomas headed narrowly off target from a corner. But City gradually turned the screw: Haaland gave a warning sign in the 15th minute with a shot that was saved, and in the 20th Josko Gvardiol tried a header from a Rayan Cherki cross. A minute later, Cherki crashed a shot off the right post, a sign the goal was coming.

And it arrived in the 25th minute: Antoine Semenyo whipped in a cross and Haaland met it with a header, angled and low, for 1-0. Coventry responded almost immediately, with Jack Rudoni firing at point-blank range only for Gianluigi Donnarumma to turn it away, but that was as close as they came: a scare without reward.

The second half was a monologue with an uncertain ending. City created chances through Cherki, Enzo Fernandez, Phil Foden (who came on as a substitute in the 65th minute) and Haaland himself, who tried again in the 72nd minute without success. Coventry, after bringing on Loum Tchaouna and Ellis Simms, had their moments too: a shot from Tchaouna in the 69th minute and another in the 88th that Donnarumma once again kept out. But the score stayed the same, even through the five minutes of stoppage time signaled by the fourth official.

The numbers behind the result

City created more clear-cut chances (three to Coventry's one) and finished with more shots overall, though their finishing wasn't quite as sharp as the dominance suggested: just 4 shots on target from 15 attempts.

Our expected goals estimate based on the match's shots puts xG at 2.02 for City and 1.45 for Coventry, figures that show the visitors created more danger than the final score suggests, even against an opponent that controlled possession so overwhelmingly.

Heading into the match, we projected an 80% chance of a Manchester City win, 14% for a draw and just 6% for Coventry, with a predicted scoreline of 2.90 goals for the home side and 0.78 for the visitors. The result matched the favorites' status, but the scoreline fell well short of that offensive forecast: City only needed one goal to win, not the nearly three we anticipated.

What the match leaves behind

With this win, Manchester City moves to 9 points from three matches played, a perfect record with a goal difference of +5, sitting atop the Premier League table. Coventry City, on the other hand, remain pointless after three outings, with a goal difference of -5. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 9 points, a distance this match, tight on the scoreboard but clear in its balance of control, only confirmed.
