Hamburger SV strikes in the 87th to stun a dominant Stuttgart

A Miro Muheim strike in the 87th minute gave Hamburger SV a 1-0 win over a Stuttgart side that controlled the match but could not find the net.

Hamburger SV strikes in the 87th to stun a dominant Stuttgart

The Volksparkstadion had gone more than eighty minutes without a goal when Miro Muheim showed up to change everything. In the 87th minute, on a counterattack, the Hamburger SV defender hit a left-footed shot from outside the box that slipped in by the right post of the Stuttgart goal, assisted by Zakaria El Ouahdi. 1-0, and that's how the score stayed until the final whistle, in a Bundesliga match that Stuttgart dominated for long stretches without having anything to show for it.

The story of the game had little to do with the final result. Stuttgart controlled the ball comfortably from the start, holding 66.1% possession to Hamburger SV's 33.9%, and kept pushing: Deniz Undav, Ermedin Demirovic and Bilal El Khannouss caused problems in the home side's box again and again without breaking through. Undav gave an early warning in the 5th minute with a shot that was blocked, and a few minutes later Josha Vagnoman fired a shot that the home goalkeeper saved low to his left. Hamburger SV, for its part, defended with discipline and looked to hit on the break: Fábio Vieira and Sebastiaan Bornauw each had first-half chances that missed the target.

A second-half siege that wasn't enough

The second half followed the same script. Stuttgart kept trying through Undav, who tested the keeper several times without luck, and brought on Chris Führich, Grischa Prömel, Dzenan Pejcinovic and Leo Sauer to freshen up the attack. There were dangerous moments at both ends: Yussuf Poulsen rattled the crossbar for Hamburger SV in the 52nd minute, and Josha Vagnoman responded shortly after, also clipping the woodwork for the visitors. But it was Hamburger SV, with less of the ball and fewer shots, that found the reward on an isolated counterattack that decided the match.

The match numbers make clear just how lopsided the control was:

StatHamburger SVVfB Stuttgart
Possession (%)33.966.1
Shots1424
Shots on target35
Big chances35
Corners59
Passes315625
Fouls committed129

Our own xG estimate, calculated from the shots taken in the match, backs up that sense of wasted dominance: 1.722 for Hamburger SV against 2.839 for Stuttgart. The visitors created more and better chances, but walked away with nothing to show for it.

The result also runs counter to what was expected going in. Our pre-match model gave Stuttgart a 55% chance of winning, with just 22% for Hamburger SV and 23% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.27 for the home side and 2.08 for the visitors. None of that held up: the team with the longer odds on paper walked away with all three points.

What it means in the standings

In the table, the result carries weight. Hamburger SV came in sitting ninth with 9 points from 6 matches played (3 wins, 0 draws, 3 losses), while Stuttgart sat 13th with 6 points from the same 6 matches (2 wins, 0 draws, 4 losses). The gap between the two sides before this match was just 3 points, and with this win Hamburger SV pulls a bit further ahead of its direct rival in the standings.

Above all, the match leaves behind a familiar lesson in soccer: dominating the game isn't always enough. Stuttgart had the ball, the corners, the shots and even the xG in its favor, but Hamburger SV knew how to wait for its moment and made the most of the only shot that truly mattered.
