Harry Kane Named Germany's Player of the Year After 61-Goal Season

The Bayern striker collected 272 votes in the poll run by Kicker magazine, nearly double the total of Michael Olise.

Harry Kane Named Germany's Player of the Year After 61-Goal Season

Sixty-one goals in a single season. With that number on his resume, the vote was essentially settled before the ballots were even counted. Harry Kane was named Germany's Player of the Year for 2026, while Vincent Kompany took home the Coach of the Year award, capping off another dominant season for Bayern Munich.

The English forward didn't just pile up goals, he delivered them at the moments that mattered most. His contributions were crucial as Bayern held onto the Bundesliga title and won the German Cup, a final in which he scored a hat trick. And in case anyone needed a reminder that he's still red hot, this past weekend he helped the Bavarians claim the German Super Cup with a 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund, even though he didn't find the scoresheet that time.

The vote, organized by Kicker magazine among the 659 members of the German Sports Journalists' Association (VDS), left Kane well clear of the pack. The English striker gathered 272 votes, comfortably outpacing teammate Michael Olise, who finished with 203. Further back came Deniz Undav with 61, Joshua Kimmich with 21 and Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann with 14. Three votes were also ruled invalid.

The fact that two Bayern players topped the ballot speaks volumes about the club's dominance this season, something also reflected in the Coach of the Year award. Kompany took nearly half the votes, finishing well ahead of Julian Schuster, the Freiburg coach who won the honor the previous year.

An Award Steeped in History

The Player of the Year award has been handed out since 1960, while the Coach of the Year prize is more recent, dating back to 2002. On the all-time list of footballers, no one tops Franz Beckenbauer, who holds four trophies. Among coaches, Jürgen Klopp and Felix Magath share the record with three awards apiece.

There's also a fitting bit of context from last season: Florian Wirtz took home the individual award a year ago, so Kane snaps that streak and becomes the first Bayern player to win it since the German midfielder's breakout campaign.

With numbers like these, the lingering question is just how much further Kane can extend his grip on the Bundesliga. For now, he keeps answering that question on the field, one goal at a time.
