The fact that a 33-year-old is outpacing that kind of competition says plenty about what he's done over the last twelve months. How many forwards can claim 73 goals for club and country, World Cup included, in a single campaign? Only Lionel Messi, back in 2011-12, went further, with 82.

The list, put together by ESPN Research with data updated through August 18, runs through twenty names and makes clear something fans have suspected for a while now: being a number 9 no longer just means finishing. It means making runs, dropping back to help build play, anticipating the second ball, and still scoring goals like it's nothing. Kane is the perfect example. At Bayern Munich he broke historic records that once belonged to Robert Lewandowski and Gerd Muller, and at the 2026 World Cup, where England finished third, he scored six goals, taking him to 14 in World Cup history for his national team. What stands out is that much of his game no longer happens near the opposing box: he was often seen dropping so deep to help build play that he'd sometimes receive passes directly from the goalkeeper.
